Isn't it because Maligo players have grown in the past year.Since Iyo vs Mayo, the expectation that I might be able to see something outrageous was too high, my opinion is "high stability". I don't say the following out of a resentment for Marigold, it's simply business. Marigold was created in an attempt to kill Stardom. Marigold uses Stardom's history, including during this build. They are built around from Stardom Stars. From Marigold's POV, it is the real Stardom. So the comparison to Stardom is unavoidable. You can throw DDT and TJPW into the conversation but it's not actually relevant to the real conversation. Rossy Ogawa is out here making comments about Saya Kamitani for a reason. We can make excuses and deflection but at the end of the day it's a wrestling war and the head to head comparison is unavoidable.Iyo Sky is a top WWE star who gets a ton of coverage in Japan. She's as big in Japan than any individual NJPW star today probably. Iyo Vs Mayu is the biggest possible match that Marigold can book in this generation outside of maybe getting Rhea Riple(who is a really big Star in Japan) involved. Stardom with no WWE or AEW help did 7,503 Yokohama Arena and 4,023 at Ryogoku Kokugikan. Marigold's 3,450 is an excellent number in a vacuum, but in the context of the help and the war, it isn't good. In particular, it isn't good news for the Marigold wrestlers underneath Mayu and Iyo because Rossy has openly critical of his own roster. If Iyo Vs Mayu by itself could draw 2,500 by themselves(or whatever number you want to guess), what does that say for Utami Hayashishita and the rest of the roster per the standard that Rossy Ogawa himself is inviting. And will that lead to every big Marigold event having a big WWE match on the card to draw?Don't be fooled for a second, if this show did around 5,000, we would 100% be framing this as a great success over Stardom for outdrawing Stardom in the same building.

The match was generally worked like a traditional senpai/kouhai deal where Mayu had to rise up and match the level of Iyo, who in-story is above her and ahead of her. It’s Iyo’s third best match this year. The match almost threatened to feel a bit *too* exhibitiony and samey but it went up a gear after Iwatani’s spectacular poisonrana. The Iyo Sky/Utami Hayashishita match from last year also felt like an exhibition as well, but that had the appeal of Iyo essentially returning to form, and reintroducing this version of herself. It functioned as a GREAT showcase. I feel that the “she brought Io Shirai back” comments that today’s match received were far more apt last year, when there was a legitimate whiplash in going from watching Iyo be fun in midcard RAW tags working at 60% speed to being the fully unleashed performer that she was in Ryogoku against Hayashishita. I didn’t get that same kind of whiplash this time around and that could mostly be attributed to the fact that Sky has *generally* been in this form all year, having been unlocked since her previous Marigold trip and now being used as a pushed babyface with the room to have her specific match with more regularity. These were the following major differences between today’s match and the Iyo we have seen all year:-Mayu’s working rhythm is the same as Iyo’s so she could naturally wrestle at her fastest foot speed. (Rhea Ripley has a completely different rhythm and style which is why it took Iyo a bit to figure her out) -Iwatani also is a maniac bumper that made Sky’s dropkicks look unreal, and Iyo could do a bunch without worrying about the hardcam.-Iyo had the latitude to do 619s and tombstones without heat from the office.****1/4
