It depends on how you do it. Yuma Anzai leans into a look that reminds you of classic AJPW guys but it doesn't really feel like a cosplay either. It strikes a pretty good balance. I don't mind that Umino was going for a Tanahashi vibe but it felt like he never really gave a good twist to it and made it his own. Kaito had a similar issue where he was going for a Muto vibe but it wasn't really working.

So this is it
I say goodbye
To this chapter of my ever-changing life
And there's mistakes
The path is long
And I'm sure I'll answer for them when I'm gone

So when the day comes and the sun won't touch my face
Tell the ones who cared enough that I've finally left this place

That's been so cold
Look at my face
All the stories it will tell I can't erase
The road is long
Just one more song

For Oiwa this one actually makes sense. I have no clue why Tanahashi pinned him, though.

And Finlay could've 100% been pinned in the main event. Even if he's a Jr he's still Hiromu. If you can castrate KOB in singles matches ASAP you can have Finlay eat a pin.

Rain Returns: Kazuchika Okada Interviewed 【WK20】【ACE】

>Ten years to the day since their last Tokyo Dome main event encounter, two giants of the Wrestle Kingdom era will collide one final time on January 4 2026. Okada versus Tanahashi will see the end of Tanahashi's legendary in ring career and mark a decisive turning point in the history of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. While the two are well familiar with one another as opponents, this final encounter will be on the biggest scale in their history, and present an altogether different dimension to their incredible rivalry. After his surprise return at New Japan Road in Anjo and the subsequent Wrestle Kingdom press conference, we got the chance to sit down with the Rainmaker

>–First of all when we saw you in Anjo, it was a big surprise, and a real throwback moment, Gedo in tow and the old music as well. How did that all come together?

>Okada: Well, when I heard from Gedo about Tanahashi’s retirement, I thought back to all the times we had wrestled, and how Gedo was in my corner for so many of those matches, so thought Gedo should be with me. It just so happened that NJPW had a card in Anjo, in my hometown, on my birthday, I didn’t have any AEW commitment that day, so when Gedo suggested making that the day everything happened, I was more than happy to.

>–When you came out in the black shirt, a lot of talk was about you being in the same outfit from Wrestle Kingdom 6…

>Okada: No,. I just forgot my jacket (laughs) Really though, that night- recently in Don Callis Family, I’ve been wearing black a lot, the Anjo call came in, I was in that shirt, so it was like, OK this works. But yeah, that night (in 2012) I just had a shirt, no jacket, because I was running in. That night Gedo wasn’t with me when I challenged Tanahashi but I wanted to have that emotional, nostalgic note. Just for one night.
>>
>>19407967
>–You were booed out of the building that night in 2012. Who was Tanahashi to you then? Do you remember how it felt?

Okada: Well, I truly believed I was going to be the champion. I just didn’t quite know then how great Tanahashi was. It’s something I only really got to grips with the more we wrestled.

–How does it feel for you to be Tanahashi’s final opponent?

Okada: Hmm, I’m not really sure I have an answer to that. It doesn’t quite feel like he’s retiring. I think I won’t know for sure until the day itself. If I was in NJPW all this time, perhaps I might get a sense that retirement was looming, but I’ve been over in America; I never really gave it thought. I think it’ll be at the end of the year, when I’m finished with the AEW schedule, and next is the Tokyo Dome, that’s when I’ll be able to give it more thought.

But everything about the Rainmaker started with Tanahashi, so it makes sense to end Tanahashi’s career.. Talking about it that way sounds a little self centered (laughs) but in the end, I feel this is a repayment in a way.

–You were Tenryu’s retirement opponent as well, and have been in several retirement matches. Can you talk a bit about that? Do you ever think about the time coming for you?

Okada: Hm. Yes, it’s a retirement match, but, and I don’t mean this in a weird way, in the end it is a normal match. It’s the same as it would be a tag match on a local house show, any match only exists in itself and never to be repeated, so I don’t think that retirement matches in themselves should be different in that sense. I’m just thinking how best can I really hit him where it hurts.

>My retirement? I mean I’ve been around to be in NJPW and see people come and go, and then for me to leave as well, it says how much of a career I’ve had already. I don’t think I’m anywhere near retiring yet, but I am aware that day will come some time. Maybe I should ask Tanahashi to be my final opponent? Oh wait he’s finishing up. (laughs)

>–How did you react when you heard Tanahashi was retiring?

>Okada: Well, mainly, OK, makes sense his having a hard time moving (laughs) but seriously, when he became President, I thought because of that it wouldn’t be all that much longer. So I wasn’t all that surprised, as long as he could live up to that Ace status until it was all over.

>–Do you see Tanahashi’s influence on your career as invaluable?

>Okada: Yes. If it wasn’t for that first Osaka match, or if it wasn’t Tanahashi in that match then the Rainmaker wouldn’t have become what the Rainmaker was. Everybody would always say those matches were great. I do think in the end if you talk about the Rainmaker without mentioning Tanahashi, there would be a big hole there. He’s essential to everything about what the Rainmaker has been.

>–You were 24 when the Rainmaker Shock happened, and Tanahashi was 36. Now you’re about the same age that Tanahashi was then, does that give you much pause for thought?

Okada: I had a lot of fire then! But I would hardly say that I’m tired now, probably less tired than he was then. I’ve been able to keep going at a top level with no injuries. Tanahashi was sensational then as well. I think Anjo was a big surprise for him, but with me as his opponent it’ll be something special.
>>
>>19407973
>–What’s the biggest difference between you then to now?

>Okada: Experience is the chief thing. Physically there are changes, maybe a few more aches and pains now that I didn’t have then, but experience counts for everything in your career. I understand more about pro-wrestling now than I did then, and I think I’ve been able to enjoy wrestling a whole lot more than I did then.

>–What was one moment in your matches together that you really felt how impressive Tanahashi was?

>Okada: Just his endurance, that never tired nature. You feel that in the ring and out of it, him doing so much without ever getting tired is what has gotten NJPW to where it is. And the fact that here he is wrestling me, and he’s the champion, or he was able to be such a great champion, even though I’m far better in the ring. I think that speaks to how great he is.

>–So for the last of these questions, can you sum up who Hiroshi tanahashi is to Kazuchika Okada? In one word?

>Okada: Summing it up is hard. He’s a rival, a friend, a senior, all those. Is it a cop out to say the one word is “intangible?” He’s a rival in so many ways, but he was a senpai who looked after me, who had kind big brother vibes about him, but someone I’ve hated, someone who frustrated me with how good he was. There’s just so much you can’t contain it in a couple of words, you can’t put your finger on it in that sense.

>–Is there anything you want Tanahashi to do as President? Anything you want him to take note of?

>Okada: If I get a good payoff, I’m happy to come here (laughs). But I want him, now he’s president, to take the time to get tired. There’s a lot that NJPW will rely on him for, a lot that he needs to do.
>>
>>19407977
ok im skipping over shit now
>–This is a little off the topic of Tanahashi, but right now, your Don Callis Family teammate Takeshita is G1 winner, and IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. How do you feel about what he achieved this year?

>Okada: I think it’s great. I’m an AEW wrestler now. So I’m glad to see that he as an other AEW wrestler can come and show that AEW guys are able to perform at that level to win a G1 and win the IWGP. I’m grateful for that.

>You know, he likes to snip at me and we do butt heads. I understand how he feels, I understand that he would have me on his mind having won the G1 and the title. I think it would be weird if he didn’t. Maybe when we find out who’s in the main event in the Tokyo Dome, that will put a line in the sand of who’s the better man. To an extent I think that’s at stake here.

>–Have you watched NJPW much since being away?

>Okada: Not so much, no.

>–This March, CHAOS was officially folded into Hontai. Any thoughts on that?

>Okada: It is a little sad to hear. I was always a CHAOS member, but then nothing lasts forever. But yeah, it’s a little sad.

>–How did you feel when you heard Hirooki Goto became IWGP World Champion?

>Okada: He’s lucky I wasn’t there (laughs). But someone told me it wasn’t just that he did it, but he was so popular. It really speaks to the fact he pulled so many people with him. Goto was always great, it’s a shame it didn’t happen sooner.

>–He had talked about wanting to defend the title against you.

>Okada: If you put in the call I’m happy to face him. If you make sure I get paid, of course (laughs). And he doesn’t have a belt anymore. We could do it for the (AEW) Unified title, I’m Unified champion...
>>
>>19407989
>–How do you feel about being so close to a sellout, which you didn’t quite get during your time in NJPW?

>Okada: It’s great. It isn’t just Tanahashi’s retirement, it’s Aaron Wolf’s debut, and it’s the result of all the other wrestlers and their efforts as well. So I’ll be appreciative of all that, and then take the credit for the next big bump in numbers.
>--You mentioned Aaron Wolf, he has said that you were the one to tell him to start out in NJPW; how do you feel about him making his debut?

>Okada: I screwed up, I should have told him to come to AEW. But you know, I started in Mexico, but it wasn’t until I got to NJPW that I really learned about the details and the finer points in wrestling, and those finer points are the most important part. So it’s NJPW that you really get the base to be the best pro-wrestler you can be and that’s why I said he should start in New Japan. And then he should study English so he can come to America. Can I say that?

>–There’s a lot of talk over match order. Nothing is decided right now, but you can definitely make arguments for the retirement match going on last and for the World Heavyweight title match to go last. What do you think?

>Okada: Right. I’ve always thought that the IWGP title should absolutely go on last, but in a situation like this Tanahashi’s last match should absolutely go on last. That’s what people are coming to see. Maybe this is pushing it a bit but it’s kind of like eating your meal, having dessert and then in comes a second entree. People might be stuffed, but even then, maybe because of that I like the main event better.

>–So you’re the main dish of main dishes. What does that match look like?

>Okada: I think like I said in the press conference, there’s a lot of people that wanted to wrestle Tanahashi before he retired but won’t get the chance, and I have to wrestle for them as well. Naito, Nakamura, Shibata.. probably Ospreay wanted to as well, Kenny as well?

>–They didn’t wrestle on this Final Road.

>Okada: There really are a lot of people. I’m not a New Japan wrestler, so there’s every chance that if I wasn’t called, I wouldn’t have gotten to wrestle him again either. So I’m the last of a very exclusive list, and I want to enjoy every bit of that if I have the luxury to, but drink in that luxury and win in the end.

>–A message for the fans?

>Okada: Well, I hope they enjoy Kazuchika Okada again. There might be people that think because Kazuchika Okada isn’t in NJPW any more that I’m not wrestling, or that if I’m not in NJPW they’ve stopped watching wrestling entirely. So I hope they tune in or show up to see me back, see how great wrestling is and then stick around.

If Inoki-san was still alive he would probably commit seppuku if he ever saw that joshi puroresu made more money than pure puroresu. These are truly dark times. Imagine Hashimoto, Chono or Muto being outdrawn by some AJW shitter. Grim...

I love AJPW right now but their highest attendance for a single show this year was around 4000 or so. Their average show only has a few hundred to maybe 1000 people at it. That makes AJPW fairly competitive on average with what NOAH draws but NJPW still usually brings in more than both of them.

Attendance counts only for certain shows, WK 20 doesn't count because it just doesn't okay??

'fraid so
at least his retirement match will draw a dime but then they'll be stuck with proven anti-draws who get outdrawn by fucking joshis (grim) and at the end of 2026 they'll somehow manage to barely make a profit in a year where they had their first sold out Tokyo Dome in more than 2 decades

'Stagnant' means unchanged, not growing. They didn't say NJPW was decreasing in value.

For them to hit the same marker as 2024 in a year when they lost the biggest draw in Japan, Naito, in a time when they haven't made any new stars yet, a sort of purgatory period? Oh, and then they sell out the Tokyo Dome for the first time in forever for Tanahashi's retirement? There is no world in which these things combined amount to a bad or 'grim' year.

Quite the opposite really. I would say things are looking up but that's because I'm not a seething anti-fan faggot that hates NJPW.

I think NJPW has been on a bit of a holding pattern this year, due to Tanahashi's retirement and the belt going onto Takeshita. But I think this means there is a strong chance that next year is a breakout year for NJPW, with lots of the wrestlers trying to step up and be the one to "carry the company" now (unless they do something retarded like keep the belt on Takeshita all year).

>【NJPW】 Hirooki Goto discusses generational shift:
>“We veterans must be the ones who don’t let them reach the top so easily.”

>Fireworks are flying in the ring as winter arrives. The tag-team tournament to determine the strongest duo, “WORLD TAG LEAGUE 2025,” has produced nonstop hard battles since its opening, and on December 9 it heads to Iizuka General Gymnasium in Fukuoka.
>Competing in A Block, Hirooki Goto (46) spoke openly—about how he deals with “antis” on social media, his love of spicy food and saunas, and his feelings toward his family—revealing sides of himself not usually shown in the ring.

>――On the generational shift in New Japan Pro-Wrestling

>Goto: I understand that younger talent needs to rise. But I think it will still take time. That’s why, until the younger wrestlers are fully developed, we veterans must be the “wall” that doesn’t let them reach the view from the top so easily. I feel a strong responsibility to be that presence.

>――On hearing Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement announcement for January next year

>Goto: Honestly, I couldn’t help but wonder if my own goal is getting close too. Tanahashi-san is four years ahead of me, but he’s always stood as a wall right beside me. When someone like that retires, it really makes you think.
>But lately he’s looked in good condition, so part of me still can’t believe he’s really retiring.
>>
>>19415856
>――Something that has changed significantly within yourself in the last year or two

>Goto: Definitely. The biggest was when my father passed away last February. He ran an electrical contracting company, and he constantly told me, “Take over. Come back home.”
>I still regret that I kept wrestling without being able to answer that wish. That’s why advancing in the NEW JAPAN CUP 2024 helped push me forward.
>The finals against Tsuji were chosen as last year’s Tokyo Sports Pro Wrestling Awards Best Bout, and it was a match that changed me.

>――Your way of dealing with “antis” on social media is unusual

>Goto: Antis are important too. I basically never ignore or block them. Some people have actually become fans after talking with me—and the opposite has happened too. That’s similar to pro wrestling, and I find it interesting.
>But if someone crosses the line and hurts a third party, I block them temporarily as a kind of “suspension.”
>I always unblock them eventually. They interact because they’re interested, and I believe people can change.
