I never saw him as some all-time great. A babyface who got booed over and over. A guy like Austin thought his run was getting tired so he turned heel. Edge got booed as a babyface, realized he had to evolve, and became a better wrestler. The Rock and Jericho reinvented themselves several times. Cena kept pushing the same character on people for over a decade. It was selfish. He was the top babyface and heel at the same time. He wasn't a great wrestler, he had some amazing matches but also faced some of the best in-ring talent ever. Great talker, but didn't fight against the garbage they fed him to say like a Batista did. He was a loyal soldier to a fault. As an in-ring storyteller, he could be shit. Letting himself get beat for 90 percent of the match and then winning. He was a 6/10

The peak uptick of Cena's primary run in the business was when he was the B-side for the first Rock/Cena Wrestlemania match.

Popularity-wise, I think he's #1. Cena is over with the Jeets and worldwide fame. Hogan/Austin was only over in America, while third-world countries love Cena.

>>
>>19480196
Okay?
>>
>>19480084
Yes he was. Bret himself underrates his own mic skills, though I admit it was the weakest part of his act overall. He ranks this high on my list because he managed to remain the top guy in North American wrestling despite working for a guy desperate to recreate the days when his promotion was led by an American hero. Bret was an absolute stud in his prime who ensured that the financial floor didn't bottom out in between the heights brought on by Hulkamania and then the Attitude Era. Cena is one of the greats, but he was always pushed by Vince while Bret got over whether Vince was behind him or not.

>>19480093
No, globally and historically. The likes of Inoki, Baba, Misawa, Santo, Mascaras, and others are all being considered, but I view mainstream American wrestling as the ocean that makes those international markets look like lakes and ponds by comparison.

Great ambassador and company man, shitty wrestler and entertainer. He’s Mt Rushmore in WWEs kayfabe propaganda but in reality he’s maybe in the top 50, and I’m being generous by only ranking him in WWF/WWE history, he’s waayyyyy lower All Time if i include the other major wrestling promotions that have existed.

>I'm not looking to debate you but it will help everyone else understand where you're coming from.
The fact that you need some context for why somebody might not consider Cena the GOAT is fucking sad. It was pretty much universally agreed upon until the last few years, here and anywhere else adults talk about wrestling, that Cena is a shit wrestler and a decent entertainer propped up by his kayfabe accomplishments. Nobody liked Cena besides children who like whatever they're told to like.

Thank you. Is it safe to assume that you weigh in-ring ability over most other factors when evaluating a wrestler?

I take in-ring ability into account with the performer's look and the several qualities that fall under the heading of "charisma," but above all I feel as though drawing power has to bear the most weight when I have these talks with other wrestling fans. As I posted above, I have Cena at #7 All Time and I disagree with those who thought he was trash in the ring.

>>19481134
It sounds like you disliked Cena simply because it was "universally agreed upon" by the IWC during his run as the top guy in WWE. That makes you the sad sack who likes whatever he's told to like. The young Cena who wrestled RVD at One Night Stand in '06 and HBK twice in '07 had already reached a standard that an IWC darling and legitmate shitter like Kyle Fletcher will probably never meet.

Whats up Bret
>>
in ring, he's serviceable and can go with the right dance partner, but he also works down to the level of his opponent as well. he's certainly not a broomstick worker like flair or bret. technically, he's sloppy and bumps awkwardly; his facial expressions are goofy as hell, and his selling is spotty at best. but he knew how to work wwe-style main even matches and build the drama though timing and pacing. his list of great matches is arguably inflated because he worked in the monthly ppv era and was on top for so long and therefore had opportunities other people didn't. plus, wwe matches are road agented to death - could he go in a different environment? of course we'll never know but it's interesting to think about.

he's good on the mic, and has the ability to carry feuds through his promos, his ability to deal with hostile crowds is really unmatched. hogan for example would not know how to handle being booed as often as cena was. sure a lot of his lines were goofy and cringe but he was marketed at kids rather than jaded smarks.

he has elite natural charisma to connect with fans, especially kids, he has crossover appeal and he's stayed relevant. he sold merch like gangbusters and was the face of wwe during its period of global expansion and record profits. on the flipside, there's no doubt he turned some people off; as over as he was, he was never "cool" in the way austin or the nwo were. attitude era fans didn't want kiddy shit and smarks didn't want a musclehead who couldn't do flips. people got sick of him and his lack of character development but i put that on wwe management (even though i can see why they wouldn't want to turn him heel) rather cena being bad.

hogan, rock and austin have to rank as the top 3 wwe guys but i'd have cena 4th.

i see it like this: hogan built the wwf/e and became bigger than it. austin and rock both outgrew it and didn't need it anymore. cena on the other hand, became the wwe, as if a blue-chip stock morphed into a wrestler.

>cena on the other hand, became the wwe, as if a blue-chip stock morphed into a wrestler.
Retarded take. Cena didn't become WWE, he was pushed artificially by Vince to hog the spotlight despite having none of the merits to do so. Even at his PEAK popularity in 2006/2007 he was never that liked nor that over. Even in his own generation he was routinely cheered over by Batista, Eddie Guerrero, Phil, Christian, RVD, etc. When I hear people talking like Cena was THE guy it's like they always forget he never got there because he was extremely over with the audience, he got there because Vince had a hard-on for him, same way he did with Roman who he tried to make Super Cena 2.0. But thankfully after close to a decade of torture he decided to try something new since this time the audience was already beyond sick of it and leaving in droves. Vince has always had the concept of the guy whose entire show revolves around him ever since the success of Hogan but Hogan earned that on his own merit. The only time he abandoned it is when he was getting his ass kicked by WCW and had to pivot, but other than that Cena is nothing more than a long line of Disney hero character for little children. But this time he had no competition, had no need to pivot and he went full throttle on it, never abandoning it whatsoever despite the audience being sick of it even as early as 2009/2010.

In short, in the AE Cena wouldn't be in midcard. He's not without any talents, but he's certainly a bang average wrestler who was elevated into a position he never deserved in the first place. And to say he's in top 5 because Vince decided to give him 6 gorillion championships is an insult. Granted I don't think John is entirely at fault same way Roman wasn't at fault for being relentlessly pushed down the audience throats until they started gagging, but this is what his career was and what we can judge him on. Can't rely on hypothethicals and alternate realities of what could it have been.
>>
>>19481259
brock is the #1 most believable wrestler of all time
>>
>>19480844
Lesner is not enough of a goat to be Mount Rushmore, he was more push than talent, more fighter than entertainer.

Hart would be first alternate, he was good during a low period, but when they were eating well, he slid down the card and then just cried about everything. There was a time he was on the Rushmore trajectory easy, helping build guys, solid worker, solid gimmick. But he was too much of a self mark. It's why HBK is considered better even though talent and legacy wise they were even.
