Did wrestling die last night or did it reach new heights?

I think it kicked off a new era.

The Empire Strikes Back era.

It’s an era characterized by the bookers saying “Fuck what fans want. Life isn’t all sugary sweet happy endings and we’re gonna remind you of that. Your heroes will lose. Accept it.”

You could call it the age of the heel, but it’s really not about the in-ring storytelling anymore. It’s more about the “meta” dynamic of showrunners fucking with a fanbase’s preferred narrative.

As an analogy, this happened before in The Walking Dead. The fans clamored for particular outcomes, and the showrunners seemed to enjoy deliberately going the other direction, killing off beloved characters. What happened was that it generated a LOT of short-term heat and interest…and then people stopped watching.
