WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event apparently had a message that some may not have picked up on, according to wrestling veteran Ryback.

The latest SNME was headlined by John Cena, who had his final match in his pro wrestling career. His opponent, Gunther, did not go easy on him, eventually forcing him to tap out to a sleeper hold. Considering Cena signifies the era of the business closest to being a sports entertainment product, and Gunther portraying the modern pro wrestling approach, Michael Cole stated on commentary that ‘professional wrestling destroyed sports entertainment.’

Michael Cole also name-dropped AEW personality Taz when talking about Cena’s career, who was a part of the commentary team the first time Cena appeared on SmackDown in 2002.

Ryback Believes This Was A Subtle Message From WWE Management

According to former WWE star Ryback, the line and the whole booking approach were an indication that the company is conclusively done with Vince McMahon’s era.

Taking to social media, Ryback expressed his thoughts on John Cena’s retirement match and stated that Michael Cole’s line was very ‘telling.’ He also provided some advice regarding the booking of present-day superstars, while praising the company’s perseverance in the business.

>In regards to John Cena’s retirement match, I’m neutral and take nothing negative from it. The line “Pro Wrestling Defeats Sports Entertainment” was very telling. You must invest in today’s talent so they build the aura and accomplishments needed to pass on to future stars in 10–15 years. That formula is why WWE has survived longer than any pro wrestling promotion, and this felt like the proper closing of the Vince McMahon era and a positive transition forward.

Whether this elicits some reactions from other WWE veterans or a comment from Triple H himself remains to be seen.

They've been "ending the vince mcmahon era" for like 5 years now. It's almost like they can't keep wrestling relevant without using the GOATs name!

there wasn't really any subtlety here. they buried vince's favorite and directly stated that sports entertainment had been destroyed. of course they did this as a final fuck you to vince.
