To my understanding some fans felt like it was character assassination to have Vince help him at WM17, but the story of the match was Rock was slowly surpassing him in the WWF hierarchy while he was sidelined, while also surpassing him when it came to being an elite champion, kicking out of 3 stone cold stunners. So Austin had no choice but to sell his soul in order to beat Prime Rock
