Not only did HHH (and Cena too but he's not the CCO) fail to realize that he wasn't "doing what's best for this business" by tainting the legacy of a major figure in WWE history, he's failing to realize that the heat generated by the controversial finish has begun to cool down and the moment to capitalize on it has passed.Gunther is one of the best performers in the world, but his character has changed for the worse over this. He was effectively built up as a dominant heel with his understated Nazi gimmick leading his European Axis-powers stable. He was portrayed throughout his IC title run as a psychotically obsessed competitor committed to showcasing his superiority over everyone on the roster. His classical style in the ring, his theme songs, and the imagery used during his entrance all complemented each other and reinforced his hardass image. Things started to stall for him after he lost the IC belt and the Creative Department didn't know what to do, but he was still very over as a heel. He got the WHC, and I liked how they portrayed him after he lost the gimmicky champion-vs-champion Saudi title match to Cody after a flash roll-up. He acknowledged the L with humility and he was eager to show off his superiority asap. That character gradually disappeared over time as HHH lost track of it. Now we have this gloating trash talker doing the "you can't see me" gesture before moving to leave the arena for three weeks straight, totally uncharacteristic of the guy I just described above. HHH doesn't know what the fuck he's doing, and Gunther's heat is gonna vanish just like Otis after he called him out.
