The American stylization (since 90% of viewers have no clue what a “homelander gimmick” would even be you fucking dorks) is an incredibly well-executed paradox for modern times because it’s a well-dressed patriotic-looking guy but he’s also got a giant tattoo on his neck, stupid hair, and calls himself the Nightmare (which most new fans have no idea is a play off his Dad’s name). What new fans see is an interesting blend of off-putting attitude and flashy flamboyance (the entrance and constant promos about being QB1) with the approachable, hard-working, have-a-beer-with persona (his podcast, his work in the ring, his do-it-the-hard-way approach, etc.). It’s an edgy take on the patriotic gimmick, and Cody does it really well. He’s literally supposed to get booed in Europe.But overall, a LOT of fans want to root for him (and do), especially new fans who discovered the product during the heavily publicized Cena farewell tour, and the Netflix and ESPN expansions.The only people booing him in the arenas are 30-60/yr old men who either don’t have kids or are at the show without them.
