I never got it.
His 2000s work is solid. Jannetty was clearly the Michaels when the rockers were a thing. But his 90s work is such dog shit. He wrestled like a drug addict who knew he could get away with being lazy cause he was getting gay fucked by the boss. There's not a single shared opponent between Bret and Shawn that Bret didn't do a significantly better job with.

The Invasion angle killed off wrestling. The ratings were still high and by 2001 WWE had moved beyond Attitude era Russoisms and started pushing guys like Angle, Jericho, Edge, Christian, and the Hardyz. The problem is that most of Taker's career sucks in hindsight. He was monster over at different points, but he was never the guy, and he was constantly in shit programs. Even during the Attitude Era, he was in dogshit tag team main events on RAW and Smackdown so many weeks out of the year.
Besides maybe being the most reliable guy Vince ever had, and a few high points with some good programs here and there, his biggest achievements were being one of the few gimmicks that got over in the New Gen, and being a symbol of Wrestlemania. But the former is a near backhanded compliment and the latter was very late into his run.
