What are the rules for the wrestlers who aren't tagged in? Can they get DQ'd against each other?

Five count to get out of the ring till DQ

That applies to being in the ring and interacting with the legal participants but I was talking about the rules of engagement for the untagged wrestlers when it comes to each other.

Basically what I'm saying is you don't often see the inactive guy do anything to interfere with his opponent's ability to tag his partner. Like while the ref and everyone in the ring are distracted by what's going on the other tag partner sneaks down from the apron and crawls through the ring to the other side to hit a low blow on the opponent's tag partner. Typically you only see the outside participants interacting with each other when they both rush the ring to mix it up alongside the legal men.

In Japanese wrestling it's normal. Tag partners regularly interfere with the ability of other tag partners to jump back into the ring to break a submission or pin.

Also the only way to book finishes in tag matches is to have the tag system itself break down and either end on a team finisher or have the inactive participants brawling too much to stop the fall in the ring. Makes it too obvious when the finish has started.

Modern tag wrestling doesn't actually have rules, but I believe back in the day you had to stay in your corner or at least your side of the ring or the ref could DQ the offending team. I'm not positive, but theres surely a bunch of midnight express matches where they exploit this.

Generally I'm fine with the only rules applying to the outside participants being they can't enter the ring without risking a DQ and have to hold the tag rope in order to receive a legal tag. Leaves more flexibility for exploitation.

I want to agree with you, but theres way too much of guys just standing on the floor staring at the action while pins or big offensives are happening. "Oh, this means nothing, his tag partner is just hanging out on the ground picking his ass" type shit, you know? Tag wrestling more than any other type really needs concrete rules for the babyface vs heel dynamic to work. Hot glue those motherfuckers to the corner if you have to, I don't know.

Tag team wrestling isn't over anymore because they won't follow the rules that make a team's momentum more important

To add to this, tags only count if it has hand to hand (so slapping your partner's back is not legal) and you had to be within a certain distance from the corner, which is why you usually have that little white rope you're supposed to hold onto
