The real reason was because Mero was a pretty accomplished boxer. Wrestling bookers will always bury anyone from legit combat sports because it disrupts the order of things as they understand it. Marc Mero having fighting credentials that a normie could see and understand he could beat Ric Flair to death if he wanted to makes them very insecure. What the fuck would Flair say, that being a fake wrestling champion means he can beat up a Golden Gloves boxer? No one believes that.

Same reason they gave Rico Constantino a ridiculous fag gimmick and tried to have Ken Shamrock do an incest angle. Anyone who is an actual badass in a way that supersedes the wrestling business is going to get buried.
