To suggest that a single segment "killed" a multi-million dollar promotion is—to put it mildly—a touch melodramatic. However, if you are looking for the "butterfly effect" moment that fractured the company’s internal foundation, the May 2022 promo where Hangman Adam Page told CM Punk he was "defending AEW from you" is undeniably the primary suspect
.
While it didn’t literally end the company—AEW continues to secure major television renewals and high-profile specials like Blood and Guts—it did trigger a sequence of professional and personal implosions:

The Catalyst: Punk felt Page "went into business for himself" by referencing real-life locker room issues (specifically concerning Colt Cabana) on live television.
The Retaliation: Punk responded months later by calling Page a "coward" in an unscripted segment that Page was not present to answer—essentially making the company's top homegrown star look foolish without a narrative payoff.
The Fallout: This friction directly snowballed into the infamous "Brawl Out" incident at the 2022 All Out Media Scrum, leading to multiple suspensions, physical altercations, and a permanent rift between the company’s biggest draw and its executive vice presidents.
Long-term Perception: Critics argue the incident shattered the "All Friends Wrestling" facade, damaging locker room morale and leading to a more fractured, "tribal" backstage environment that some believe contributed to later ratings plateaus.

In short—it didn't kill the company, but it certainly ended its "honeymoon phase" and replaced it with a perpetual cycle of PR damage control.

When was the last time Dynamite had over a million viewers? Early 2023?

Where are they now? Like half a million or so?

Listen, if you actually care about the art form of professional wrestling and not just "sports entertainment" soap operas, there isn't even a debate. AEW is for the sickos, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

1. The Work Rate (The "Graps")
WWE is basically a series of chinlocks and "superstar poses" interrupted by 20-minute promos. In AEW, we get 20-minute bangers every single week. Whether it’s a 5-star classic from Will Ospreay or a bloody Texas Deathmatch, the athleticism is on another level. We don't need "The Rock" coming back for the 500th time when we have Konosuke Takeshita hitting a Blue Thunder Bomb that actually looks like it hurts.

2. No Scripted Robots
WWE promos feel like they were written by a committee of 90-year-olds who just discovered TikTok. In AEW, the wrestlers actually get to speak like human beings. There’s no "creative" stifling the organic connection with the crowd. When someone cuts a promo, it’s raw, it’s visceral, and it doesn't sound like a canned corporate press release.

3. The "Forbidden Door"
WWE acts like no other wrestling companies exist. It’s a bubble. AEW acknowledges the entire world. Seeing New Japan stars, CMLL legends, and indie standouts all on one screen? That’s how you build a universe, not just a "brand." If you don't know who a random luchador is, that’s on you for not doing the homework. Google is free!

4. Long-Term Storytelling
People say AEW doesn't have stories, but they just aren't paying attention. The Hangman Page arc took years to pay off. You have to actually watch the shows (and maybe a few BTE vlogs and Japanese tour highlights) to get the nuances. WWE just hits you over the head with "The Bloodline" for three years straight because they think the audience has the memory of a goldfish.

WWE isn’t really wrestling. Wrestling means hillbilly shit, losers in their basements, and yardtards.

WWE is entertainment. When I support WWE I am supporting their movies, TV shows, YouTube, and more. I am playing the games, I am engaging in social media platforms, I am the brand and the brand is Me. This is why I live WWE every moment of my life. And, more importantly, this is fan interaction that AEW will NEVER have.

Oh wow, another thread where the OP is a fucking moron who doesn’t understand the business. WWE is the most profitable it’s ever been. The shows still draw FAR MORE than AEW, and the match quality is better than ever before. On any given SD or RAW you will get at least one amazing match.

I am so tired of people acting like WWE is dying. You’ve been saying this for 20 years, it’s old news. Stop watching, I don’t care. Tell all your friends to stop watching, it doesn’t matter. In the end, there are still millions of us E chads who spend money on the WWE, who watch every show, and who would DIE for Vince and the WWE.

AEW will never have this.

This all sound like talking points from 2019 but this one especially is retarded considering we all know how much you all seethe about TNA now.

>we

YOU TALK ALOT ABOUT WORKERS RIGHTS
>>
>>19898267
LISTEN TO YOU. JUST LISTEN TO YOU. You think you’re a fan? You think you "live" the brand? You’re just another casual mark swallowing the corporate slop while the true art of professional wrestling is being perfected by Tony Khan.

You want to talk about "profitable"? Congratulations, you’re a fan of a balance sheet. I bet you watch the quarterly earnings calls and get a physical rush when the EBITDA is up, don't you? Real fans care about work rate, we care about cagematch ratings, and we care about the Graps.

WWE isn't "entertainment," it's a sanitized, over-produced theme park for people who need their hands held through a storyline. You need a 20-minute promo to understand why two guys are mad? Pathetic. In AEW, the story is told in the RING.

>>19898280
All memes and console warring aside, I was a huge TNA fan up until D'amore was fired. My issue is not with TNA or TNA getting on AMC and finally growing their brand again.

My issue is the exact same Edrones who shat all over TNA, tried to derail Impact gamethreads on /asp/ and /pw/, and constantly attacked TNA for simply existing in the same world as WWE doing a hypocritical 180 and pretending they've been massive fans since the beginning.
>>
>>19898307
promo's good
>>
>>19898267
You "would die for the brand"? That is the most cringe-inducing, bootlicking thing I have ever heard. You are a drone. You are a cog in the TKO machine. While you're busy "engaging in social media platforms," I'm busy analyzing the subtle nuances of a Best Friends transition spot that proves the industry is evolving past your 1980s "Hulk Up" nostalgia.

WWE is a "brand." AEW is a REVOLUTION.

Go back to your 2K games and your TikTok filters. I’ll be over here watching a 4-man tag match from 2005 ROH on a grainy DVD to remind myself what real wrestling feels like. You wouldn't last five minutes in a G1 Climax discussion.

DO NOT talk to me about "the business" until you’ve at least studied the Japanese tape trade from the 90s. You're a casual. You're a mark. You're done.

I feel very seen by this post and this thread seems like a safe space, so here it goes:

People are going to think I'm false flagging or larping I'm unironically not.

Wrestling has been the only thing I've got enjoyment from for nearly 15 years now. I only watch WWE, and the rise of CMLL and AEW has been triggering as fuck to me because I'm worried WWE is going to be knocked down.

Every morning I wake up I check /pw/ and I'm sweating as I go through the catalog hoping there isn't bad news concerning WWE. When Ciampa left for AEW I punched my wall.

I've got OCD which triggers severe anxiety and depression and now because WWE is the only thing I care about my OCD makes me do stuff that relates to my WWE. I wash my hands 5 times every night before I go to bed otherwise when I wake up something bad about WWE will happen.

Again, I'm not larping at all. Honestly wish I was. I don't know what to do but it's ruining my life. After I read about the latest round of releases, I kicked the stairs so hard that I think I broke my toe. I can't even go see a psychologist because it's all just so pathetic. The horrible thing is I don't even enjoy WWE that much but I just can't stop obsessing over it.

Yet another Porky meltdown
>>
Reminder Phil got his payback the following week with telling hangman to come out for a match when he wasn’t in the building. Then still cried at brawl out anyway
>>
>>19898653
He called Hangman out months later. Punk beat Hangman clean at the PPV, fearing Hangman would be uncooperative or shoot on him. He became champ and got injured I think the first Dynamite after by jumping the railing. I think the real damage came during Punk's time off. He spent that time snooping around, reading every interview and dirtsheet. Hangman did some interviews and that is where many think Punk broke. When he came back he called out Hangman despite feuding with Mox, he called him out again in the scrum as well as having his melty. Then brawl out happened.
