In the early 2000s when Meltzer said UFC was a direct competitor to the WWE, Vince attempted to buy out UFC, when that didn't work he launched a smear campaign. This is essentially sabotage from the top down. Bring in some guy nobody likes or cares about, book him to win everyone, drive out your customers.
