On tonight's docket: Lucha action in NJPW Fantasticamania, a walk down the King's Road and more!

A lot of empty seats. Guess they hate lucha in Japan
>>
Brutal.
>>19927907
I also wondered why they didn't just run it in Korakuen like usual. I haven't checked but I imagine the next shows will be there.
>>
>>19927872
>>19927939
I'm not a big lucha guy, it's a unique art form and sometimes really neat, just not really my thing overall. That said, Hechicero rules and I wish he was just a regular part of the NJPW roster.
>>
>>19927979
Essentially exactly how I feel too. I don't really care for lucha at all. There's a reason Fantasticamania is the bulk of my yearly "true" lucha intake. I do really prefer when they do three or four nights like this year, instead of previous when there's been 9 nights, that ends up being pretty fatiguing for me.

Weird-ass leapfrog. I like it.

Such a weird main event on this show. I get that you might not want a time limit draw to close out, but SHO shitposting with Ultimo Guerrero feels just as weird. It seems the other shows have more "proper" main events, but that's a strange one to open on.

I was 60% convinced Kawakami was winning this. Happy he didn't, but I'm unsure about him turning.
>>
Not a ton of current wrestling today, so I'll dig from the archives. This is Astronauts vs. Sato & Sekimoto from 10.08.2020.
>>
God DAMN.
>>
Sato is so nasty. I love watching him wrestle.
>>
Sekimoto has my favorite neckbreaker. The sitout is vile.
>>
>>19930377
If the Japanese weren't immune to CTE I'd be slightly concerned
>>
>>19930425
Getting CTE immunity and 300% neck strength so early in the skill tree is busted. There's a reason they're OP.

I'm gonna close tonight out with another walk down the King's Road! The first webm is an updated version of the kneebreaker spot from last week. I made this and then forgot I had it when it was time to post the match.
>>
The first real King's Road feature of the day is Akiyama taking on Hiroshi Hase in the Tokyo Dome! This match is from 01.05.1998.
>>
SLAPPA
>>
>>19930970
based match honestly

Hase is underrated, guy had a lot of charisma
>>
>>19931038
Yeah, it's fun. The pacing is a little so-so, though. The grappling is solid and Hase does a lot to carry it, but as much as I like Akiyama I don't think he really keeps up. Not for 15 minutes of a 30-minute match, anyway. And I like grappling! It gets a lot better when it becomes the pissed veteran vs. scrappy rookie match it was destined to be.
>>
>>
Somre more of that patented Hase charisma.
>>
Hase's uranage is a thing of beauty.
>>
HUGE elbow here.

I'd like to see this in NJPW more. Uemura has one but I feel like he doesn't bring it out that much and it's treated as just a move.
>>
I'll be calling it an early night there! Thank you all for checking in. Tomorrow I'll be back with more King's Road action and maybe something else if it pops up. Thanks again for hanging out! I'll see you then. Goodnight, bros.
>>19931499
Leaving the thread in your hands now, brother. Always happy to have you here.

Yeah, and on top of that I feel like he barely uses it anymore. He's a perfect fit for it, too.

Because I have a Mil Mascaras-shaped blindspot in my webm folder and I thought the requested matches really didn't show off his strong suits much at all, I picked some on my own. This is Mil Mascaras vs. Jumbo Tsuruta from 25.08.77!
>>
Some really cute entrance camerawork in this one. Don't think I've seen this before, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with 70's AJPW.

>>
Really good spit sell from Jumbo here.
>>
>the condensation steaming off Jumbo
So fucking sick.
>>
>>
Same here. Looks so sick.
>>
>>
Such a cool escape.
>>
>>
One more! This is Mil Mascaras vs. The Destroyer, from 09.10.1973.
>>
>>
>>
>>
This rocks. Everyone's reaction is perfect, too.
>>
>>
Mil Mascaras' sell when he stumbles away is so good here. Interesting too since both of these guys were very notorious politickers. He's really giving Destroyer a lot here.
>>
This is the start of the third fall. Destroyer smells blood in the water and goes for the leg right away. Mil Mascaras sells it like death. So sick.
>>
That's all for the little Mil Mascaras excursion for today, but we're staying in AJPW for two more matches. Pants off from this point onward, because we're walking the King's Road. This is Kobashi & Johnny Ace vs. Stan Hansen & Vader from 01.05.1998! I really like this one, I feel like it's not talked about enough in favor of the other matches from the brief Hansen/Vader tag team.
>>
>>19936316
This was Vader's first match back in AJPW after jobbing to Edge on Heat like a week earlier. People don't talk enough about Vader's career resurgence in AJPW.
>>
>>19936316
>>19936325
I'm wrong. This was Vader testing the waters for a Japan come back while still in the WWF. The match I'm thinking of was a Real World Tag League match in November 1998.
>>
>>19936325
>>19936332
And what a crazy Japan comeback it is, he looks fantastic. What I think is extra interesting about this match is that Vader's got a clear UWF flair to him here that he didn't have in NJPW. You can see it clearly in the punches he throws early on, and it shows in the suplexes too. Super cool.
>>
>>19936349
That is a cool catch, a bit of continuity from his work in UWFi that bridged the NJPW and AJPW runs. I'm sure you've seen it, but if you haven't you should watch Vader vs Inoki 1/4/96, helluva match.
>>
Absolutely gorgeous suplex.
>>19936363
Yeah, exactly, It makes him fit in super well into the lineage of Albright's team UWF being the major gaijin heels in AJPW after Hansen's time on top.
>if you haven't you should watch Vader vs Inoki 1/4/96
I have. I want to say that was one of the first 10 matches I ever made webms of. They're from 2021, damn. Time flies. I hope Inokibro's doing well.
>>
I thought it was hilarious how hard Hansen bumps for this, but looking at it closely I saw that the poor guy just completely misses the barricade on his first attempt given that he's wrestling blind.
>>
>lands face first
Kobashi sisters... Why must we suffer
>>
Fuck, that back bump (or lack thereof) is nasty.
>>
>be johnny ace
>don't manage to break the nippon table (folded 1000 times) on the first go
>"oh well, i'll just sell it anyway"
>hansen throws the fucking table directly at my cerebral vertebrae
Tough luck kid, should've gone harder
>>
Hansen's walking over to check on Ace, what a nice guy :)
>>
>>19936736
HANSEN NO
>>
>>19936792
Whose the asian? He looks dimes. Was he good?
>>
Hansen has one of the best styles ever. The ferocity in this buckle slam ddt combo is just insane.
>>19936821
I genuinely cannot tell if this is a shitpost, but I'll indulge you. That's Kenta Kobashi, one of the four pillars of AJPW and inarguably in the top 10 wrestlers to come out of Japan. One of the best underdog babyfaces of all time and holder of one of Japan's most iconic title reigns in NOAH. One of my favorite wrestlers ever.
I'd say he's pretty good.
>>
Where's the anon who complains about Shooter's gear when you need him? Ace's trunks in this match are rough, man.
>>
>>19936856
Thanks anon. I'm pretty casual and have a backlog of old school stuff I want to watch. I don't know shit but I love watching these bits to add to my backlog, god I wish I was NEET
>>
>>19936947
I've been chronicling the decade between 1988 and 1998 in AJPW over the past couple of years. If you dig into the archive you'll see plenty of match recommendations along with my webms. Depending on what you've seen before, the King's Road stuff is a great entrypoint. Hugely influential and almost without exception incredible.
>>
What a finish.
>>
Lastly for tonight, this is Misawa vs. Kawada, a Triple Crown title bout from the same night!
>>
ERUBOOOOOOOOO SUICIDAAAAAAAAAA
>>
Brutal. The only word for it.
>>
>>
Lord above.
>>
>>
Kawada's gamengiri is so sick. Likely because he just kicks the guy in the face, but still.
>>
