You know, Gedo, you are allowed to have one heel group in your company that wins without cheating. You can just do that.

I have no clue why theyre going this route. And to need to cheat to be Hartley Jackson of all people. The tall angry German I get, but he shouldn't be making himself look like a buffoon

>>20056330
This is one of the most irritating parts. I hate all interference at this point, because it's SO overdone in modern wrestling, but I do at least understand the idea of getting heat by presenting a heel as capable of winning on his own, but he cheats, because he's an asshole who takes shortcuts.

Without cheating, Gedo heels would lose to basically everybody on the roster, short of young lions. Newman almost lost to Hartley Jackson, Narita took a visual pin to Kojima yesterday.

No thousy for the cup. At this rate we are gonna fall to the Joshis. This year's overall numbers will look fine thanks to Bakahashi, but next year's outlook is grim. Newman will probably win the title at some point next year and sign with Tony by WK 2028. Glad we are gonna spend a year and change building him up for one title run though!
>>
>>20057427
>Glad we are gonna spend a year and change building him up for one title run though!
As opposed to what, do nothing and draw no money with him at all, like they did with Kidd?
>>
>>20057596
I view it as a lose lose. Because they do have to push him now to get any value, but at the same time, it would probably have been more beneficial to put someone else in that spot (ideally a domestic talent); Like Ice. Tsuji is clearly just Goto, (not the nostalgia run version) but if he had no competition in his generation. He is not a hot act on top and pushing Newman doesn't help them rebound with respect to drawing because he is 1 a gaijin and 2 not a long term wrestler who can be used to get someone else over. I appreciate they at least used Kidd to help Tsuji. What is the long term play with Newman? You sacrifice potentially two years to getting him over at the expense of everyone else hoping he'll be the Ospreay that stays?
>>
>>20057596
he's a bland shitter, he shouldn't be in NJPW at all. I wish Tony bought this dude too, because NJPW never learns and always falls for another white piggu meme.
>>
>>20057708
It's the reality of where NJPW lives in the ecosystem right now. You have to push them while you have them, use them to draw what money you have and then hopefully you can elevate somebody with them on the way out. They should probably already be thinking about who's going to be leading UE after Newman leaves.
>>
>>20057734

I would agree if at the end of the day freelancers and players from other companies would be treated fairly.

All this schizo shitposting aside I do feel down about the whole thing right now. I like a lot of guys on the roster old and young but any momentum from the beginning of the year feels like eons ago now. HoT has absolutely worn out any inkling of goodwill EVIL put in and Ren has shown zero growth, they suck the life out of anything they are in for me now. Wolf has been kneecapped by the House and looks to be stuck in the vortex until Dominion. Tsuji is severely lacking for someone with his accolades and status in the company. There are other young guys I think are better gaining support but it all moves too slow and steady for the lethargic crowds and company atmosphere.

It feels like there is little future for pro-wrestling in general let alone in the land of of live touring and struggle Japan.

I kinda of disagree with this, I think Tsuji's been really good whenever he's had stuff to do, but a big problem with this tour has been that he's not doing anything. It's fucking crazy he didn't have a singles match at the Anniversary Show.

Fair, the booking is certainly doing few people much good. His first defence being the clown show of Lee didn't help, it's part of why I actually think Goto winning and Tsuji defending could be the best thing for keeping Tsuji strong. You can save Uemura for later on a bigger stage.
>>
>>20080375
I certainly wouldn't turn down Goto vs. Tsuji, but I think Uemura should win the cup. It'd be his first major accolade, I think Sumo Hall is an appropriately big stage for these two having their first match over the IWGP Championship, it'd be showing a commitment to the Reiwa guys that to this point I think has still been somewhat tentative.

I'd absolutely love a Goto defense at Dontaku or something, though.

>[New Japan] President Hiroshi Tanahashi speaks about his complete transition from player to manager: "I'm not pessimistic about the departure of a top star. This is part of New Japan Pro-Wrestling's history and a process of renewal."

https://proresu-today.com/archives/292451/

>On January 4, 2026, at the Tokyo Dome, Hiroshi Tanahashi , who had led New Japan Pro-Wrestling as its "ace" for many years and saved the ring from the brink of despair countless times , finally put an end to his active career.

>Watched by a packed crowd—the largest since Antonio Inoki's retirement show—Tanahashi left the ring and is now dressed in a suit, dedicating himself to the important responsibility of "President and CEO of New Japan Pro-Wrestling."

>With the passion of a player still lurking within him, he faces the cold, hard reality of numbers as a manager. Amidst the shockwaves caused by the departure of key players who built an era, what kind of blueprint does the new president envision?

>In the first part of this two-part interview, we delved into President Tanahashi's current position, covering everything from the changes in his mindset immediately after retiring from active competition, to organizational reforms from a management perspective, and his positive organizational theory that views the departure of top players as "renewal."

--: Thank you for joining us today. First of all, congratulations on your retirement from active competition at the January 4th Tokyo Dome event. It must have been a very tough day, but were you able to give it your all?
>Tanahashi: Yes, thank you. Well... I was able to give it my all.

--We fans also have a firm grasp of Tanahashi's final heroic performance. Now, as you make a complete transition from player to manager, what were the first reforms you undertook, or what aspects of yourself did you change?
>Tanahashi: In terms of physical things, I cut the back of my hair.
>>
>>20084711
--: I think it suits you very well, and you have the aura of a business person. Have you made any declarations within the company, such as at morning meetings, about your intention to "focus on management from now on"?
>Tanahashi: I think I said it on January 5th, the first day back at work. I went to the office in the morning on the 5th, and then headed to the tournament at Ota City General Gymnasium, and I told all the employees, "I've once again become solely focused on being president. I look forward to your continued support."

--: You've gone from being a player in the ring to being the president leading an organization. Is the difference in perspective significant?
>Tanahashi: It's completely different now.

--: Specifically, what aspects are you referring to?
>Tanahashi: It's all about the "numbers." When I was a wrestler, I relied on my own "feelings" to gauge things like fatigue from travel, attendance figures at venues, and the energy and atmosphere. But now, the president's office receives reports with precise figures. "This tour incurred these expenses for travel and accommodation, attendance was around this much, and sales were around this much. This is the projected balance for this month."

--: As a company, you have a responsibility to always be profitable, right? Especially since New Japan Pro-Wrestling is a group company of a listed company (Bushiroad), I imagine that year-on-year comparisons and other figures put a lot of pressure on you.
>Tanahashi: We also get clear year-on-year data. The tour routes for each venue are roughly the same every year, so the attendance figures—whether it's an increase or decrease compared to the same time and venue last year—are brutally clear. We can be happy about the increases, but the problem is when it's a decrease. If we don't do a thorough analysis of why we didn't draw a crowd in this location on this day of the week, it just ends up being a case of "we didn't draw a crowd."
>>
>>20084711
-: We've had a rather lighthearted conversation, but now we'll move on to a more serious topic. In recent years, we've seen a series of departures from key players and top stars who defined an era. As the head of the organization, how do you view this situation, and how do you plan to rebuild it?
>Tanahashi: I've stayed with New Japan Pro-Wrestling my whole career, but there was a time in the past, around 2004, when I considered going to America. So I understand how the wrestlers feel. It's a natural right for a professional wrestler to go to an organization that values them highly and offers better conditions, including a higher guarantee. That's why improving the internal structure of New Japan Pro-Wrestling, raising guarantees, and reviewing contract terms are urgent priorities. I strongly feel that we must create a "bulwark to prevent other organizations from poaching our best wrestlers," such as introducing multi-year contracts, in order to maintain what makes New Japan Pro-Wrestling unique.

--: So, while you are aware of the crisis caused by the departure of key players, you are also working to improve the environment?
>Tanahashi: However, I'm not at all "pessimistic" about the current situation. That's because this is the very "history" that New Japan Pro-Wrestling has repeated over the years. When the older generation is full and the positions are settled, someone leaves. In the past, we've seen the Three Musketeers of Fighting Spirit leave, and Satoshi Kojima leave, right? More recently, Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay have left. But each time, young wrestlers have fiercely competed for the "open positions," and new stars have been born—that's the history of New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
>>
>>20084714
-: When the top is left open, it creates space for something to push up from below, right?
>Tanahashi: That's right. With the top tier gone, the question is who will come next to fill the void? Right now, a new generation, including Tsuji (Yota), is rising up at a tremendous pace. In general companies, after a charismatic employee leaves to start their own company or is poached, the remaining younger employees often awaken and become the new star employees, right? I've seen that history happen many times in the past, so I'm not pessimistic about this departure. I even think, "This is the greatest opportunity for young wrestlers." However, I understand all too well that the fans who have supported us for so many years are feeling lonely.

--: Because professional wrestling has a long career lifespan, there's also the aspect that generational change is less likely to occur.
>Tanahashi: That's right. Professional wrestling takes time to develop, but once you reach the top, you can continue to perform at the forefront even into your 40s and 50s, so it's really hard for upper positions to become vacant. That's why phenomena like this, where top performers leave, can be seen as one of the healthy "renewal" systems of the organization.

—In a way, it might be similar to a system like Recruit, which is known as a company that produces talent, where people rotate through the company over a certain period of time, and new talent is nurtured one after another.
>Tanahashi: That's absolutely right. Inoki once said that "professional wrestling is a mirror of society," and that's really true. I think the changes in employment mobility and organizational cycles in society are directly reflected in the New Japan Pro-Wrestling ring. Inoki was truly a prophet.
>>
>>20084715
--: I'd like to ask you from the perspective of wrestler management. You mentioned that it's necessary to review contract structures and compensation designs in order to compete with large overseas professional wrestling organizations. What specific blueprint do you have in mind?
>Tanahashi: The guarantee amounts offered by overseas organizations are enormous. It's a world where hundreds of millions of yen change hands with multi-year contracts, so the reality is that it's still difficult to offer contracts of that level in Japan, given the current market size. So, how do we raise the guarantees for the wrestlers who stay and fight in Japan? There's only one way to do that: "have good matches, work hard on promotional activities, and increase the organization's sales."

--: So the only way is to increase the size of the business itself.
>Tanahashi: Yes. That's why we're now actively encouraging young wrestlers like Shota Umino and Yuya Uemura to appear in the media and participate in promotional activities. They're helping to raise their profile, increase merchandise sales, and boost audience attendance. This, in turn, benefits the entire organization and ultimately leads to an increase in their own guarantees. It's important that they understand this cycle and act accordingly.

--: So, it's about the expansion of New Japan Pro-Wrestling's market size within the entire domestic sports industry.
>Tanahashi: The total number of people who spend money and time on sports and entertainment won't change drastically. It will be a "competition for disposable time" with various genres such as baseball, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. But I believe that professional wrestling is the genre with the "greatest potential for growth" among all sports.
>>
>>20084720
--: The most likely possibility, you say?
>Tanahashi: Yes. That's because the proportion of people who "know the name of professional wrestling but have never actually seen a match" is overwhelmingly higher than in other genres. With baseball or soccer, most people have probably seen it on TV or in person at least once, even if they don't know the rules. But with professional wrestling, there's a huge segment of people who "know about it but have never experienced it." In other words, if you can get them to watch it once and experience the excitement and fun, it's the blue ocean where there's the greatest potential for them to become fans.

--: I see. So the challenge is how to attract untapped fan bases. To do that, the promotional activities that President Tanahashi diligently carried out during his time as the ace are now needed across the entire organization.
>Tanahashi: The DNA I've cultivated by traveling all over the country and promoting pro wrestling to people who don't know about it has been passed down to today's young wrestlers. Ten years ago, people in their 20s came to the venue because of my promotion, and now they're married and come to the venue with their children as a family. This is a by-product of the promotion that I've been steadily sowing seeds for over the years, and it's the greatest achievement. Pro wrestling venues, which were once "something that men get excited about," are seeing an increase in female fans, and are now evolving into "a space that families can enjoy with peace of mind." I want to accelerate this trend and create a New Japan Pro-Wrestling space that the whole family can enjoy, just like going to an amusement park or theme park.
