Yes they spend money developing it, no they don’t spend nearly as much games that aren’t yearly releases. It would be more honest at this point to make it free-to-play with a super barebones roster and limited game modes, lock everything behind a subscription and paywalls and then provide even the same amount of support the game gets now. If they charged $10 a month for a subscription, gave away some content for free, some from grinding and some from a pay wall I think that would work better.

My first instinct was to hate it too, and it's bullshit that they know some people won't want to grind it out so you can pay to skip tiers, but honestly, you're going to want to play the game anyway ideally, so having stuff you're constantly unlocking is fine.
