New Japan... has been a fucking disaster
>>
>>20088866
Up until ZSJ/Oiwa it was an awful tournament. They need to figure out how to start the tournament off without grim shit.
>>
I do not care for Callum Newman.
>>
>>20089270
they signed him to a multi-year deal so enjoy callme woman being forced into the main event. he'll win the world title and then he'll get a toybox contract and NJPW will choose another bland white piggu to push because they never learn.

ZSJ - Goto - Oleg - Yuya would've been a goated semi final 4
Last time I watched New Japan, Callum Newman was trying so fucking hard to be literally Ospreay and it was embarrassingly bad. Been watching the whole Cup now, and he seems to be doing his own thing, and while I don't love it, I don't hate him anymore either
Shota is as shit as ever and that main event sucked dick. God, remember all the good faith he had as a Young Lion? Were we just wrong about him back then? What went wrong? I want to blame Jon Cuxley
>>
The unwillingness to give Newman a chance just doesn't make sense to me after the years of huge pushes given to white, zsj, and Finlay
>>
>>20089846
>Callum Newman was trying so fucking hard to be literally Ospreay and it was embarrassingly bad.
He's trying to be Finlay, who was trying to be Jay White. He has a better voice for it than Finlay but it still sucks

>>20089870
I am giving him a chance, the issue is he can wait. There was no need to put him in over Goto.
>>
>>20089870
Jay White was good from the get go (or almost), so was ZSJ, even before he ever set foot in the company. Finlay was shit for ~8 years or so, and seeing as he fucked off as soon as he got better, it wasn't fucking worth it was it?
>>
>>20089913
Well based on how njpw does things no one else made sense for that semi vs shota. They wanted to put focus on some young guys and the other options were baloney, Narita, and oiwa but he's stuck as Zack's fucktoy in his shit stable. Oh and I guess they could have put henare there especially after shota's interview
>>
>>20089935
They still were never good enough for the huge pushes they got. Newman has already been in njpw for like 3 years and is apparently locked in for another 3

>On the latest open the voice gate they said that Dragon Dia is expected to be signing with NJPW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1gPWOQrNzw (go to 54 minutes into the episode)

>Also on the VOW patreon they said that NJPW is close to signing another Japanese junior wrestler who they refer to as a major freelancer, and say that he has a match against a NJPW wrestler on a indie show but the match hasn't been announced yet.

>They also say that "A NJPW source noted that this wrestler has fans within the company, including the wrestler he's working with. If this junior were to eventually end up being signed by NJPW, it would likely receive universal praise, both internally, and among fans."

NJPW should have transitioned to a CMLL factory type like during the pandemic.

Maybe they should just adjust their young lion system and not wait to push their young lions until they are in their late 20s-early 30s.

It's tiring seeing discussion of NJPW on english websites now. NJPW has been getting better and rebuilding since Tanahashi came in.The young guys are stepping up and having great matches and getting showcased. As someone who has watched Nooj since around 2011ish, It's refreshing to see new guys put on great matches, It just doesn't have the same buzz in the west as it once did so a lot of the more casual watchers or people who just see clips or read news stories instead of watching the shows spread this whole doom narrative when the company is actually doing pretty well., It's tiring but whatever, Getting a lot of fresh matchups lately and it's cool to see guys carve out their own path. If anything, all the gaijin getting special treatment is just hurting NJPW

For all intents and purposes I think puro is in a good place. NJPW, AJPW, NOAH, Dragon Gate, and DDT are all building their young guys and even some smaller promotions are building up a little young talent. You just won't get the sense of that if instead of watching you're trusting people online to tell you how these promotions are doing.

>then he'll get a toybox contract and NJPW will choose another bland white piggu to push because they never learn.
no. njpw has learned exactly what is expected of them. they are squinty-eyed slaves for america-sama, tony-sama and aew-sama. their purpose is to develop wrestlers for aew. they are a developmental, this is exactly what they are supposed to do. you are the one who never learns.
>>
>>20093378
I mean NJPW clearly arent in that good a place when they feel the need to hire freelancere and stars from other promotions to bolster their Jr division instead of using their own jrs.
NJPW leveraged a working agreement to get a look at Dia for example, introduce him to fans over multiple Jr tournaments - basically test drove the jump - then signed him.
>>
>Voices of Wrestling has learned that NJPW has shown serious interest in heavyweight ex-JTO tag team champion Ryoma Tsukamoto. A JTO source noted to The Flagship that Tsukamoto recently took the NJPW dojo entrance exam. Tsukamoto began his career with All Japan, before spending a few years with TAKA Michinoku's JTO
>He's now a freelancer who has primarily worked DDT since mid to late 2025

>Super J Cast's Joel Abraham reported on Tuesday that Tsukamoto was being "looked at" by NJPW, along with two previously unreported names, Pro Wrestling BASARA's Takata Nakano and Masato Kamino

>Abraham was also able to confirm the signing of Dragongate's Dragon Dia, whose NJPW interest was first reported here and by Open The Voice Gate on Tuesday, along with Kuukai, the ex-Michinoku Pro wrestler who had worked a two NJPW tours in 2025, and most recently worked New Year Dash on January 5.

>Another interesting name we've heard attached to NJPW is Yutani, a lucha trained Japanese wrestler currently working regularly with CMLL. Yutani is not believed to be under contract to CMLL, meaning he would be free to work or sign with NJPW at any time. He is believed to be a permanent resident of Mexico, however (and in a relationship), which could complicate a potential full time move. He is being looked at as a heavyweight.
>>
>>20096711
>NJPW aggressively scouting and raiding smaller Japanese promotions was an inevitable ripple effect and a function of the post-AEW landscape. Prior to a second big money major league promotion emerging in America, New Japan largely operated on an island, able to sustain the occasional WWE raid by constantly restocking the dojo and leveraging jumps of major stars like Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, or Shingo Takagi once they outgrew their home promotions. The current WWE/AEW arms race means the threat of losing talent is constant, fast, and inevitable, and it extends beyond just the top of the card. In order to survive, New Japan had to find new ways to fill the roster beyond the slow moving Young Lion process, and we are seeing that play out in early 2026.
>>
Leave YUTANI alone or else
>>
theyre not streaming the press conference today?

>>20095314
I give it 6 months before he's having a twitter meltdown about not being used. Sad really
>>
>>20096711
Sucs for the DDT fans who wanted Tsukamoto to officially sign to DDT but he was a freelancer and came in only for the DG's show and to fill cards when people were absent.
>>

and that's HENARE's move too lol
>>
Shota is boring. Stop with the Shota psyop.
>>
>>20106995
He's a good wrestler but he doesn't have what it takes to be pushed as a top guy even in this current field. If there was ever a bridesmaid figure to have for this generation it's him, not Oiwa like they seemingly wanna do.
>>
>>20107148
I think Oiwa is in a much better spot with clearer direction. Dethroning KOB and overcoming Zack are clear goals for him. Shota has no clear feuds or goals, and is getting babyface mogged by Yuya. There was a time where thought feuding with Gabe would've been a good way to elevate him

After losing about 3 gaijin and barely keeping 1, naturally the best course of action was to make every japanese babyface a bridesmaid to another white boy who spits a lot, curses a lot and has already won more than they have

New Japan cup isn't really a big deal so Newman winning doesn't matter. But it's kinda crazy how much njpw likes him giving him this and a multi-year deal
>>
>>20108307
They want a gaijin heel for domestic talent to overcome like many times in the past, it's not that complicated the NJC is just his ticket and he's been building to it in the background a while.
>>
>>20108307
Because the company is so lacking in credible main event heels that they gave fucking Jake Lee a heavyweight title shot, and Narita as HoT leader has been an absolute disaster. He's also only 23 when pretty much every AEW poached talent has been over 30, yeah everyone knows he won't be around for ever but he's got much more time in his career for a run in America later

Let's take a look at the last 4 winnners of heavyweight tournaments in NJPW.
>G1 34: Zack Sabre Jr.
>New Japan Cup 2025: David Finlay
>G1 35: Konosuke Takeshita
>New Japan Cup 2026: Callum Newman
Seems that to win a tournament in the heavyweight division you either need to be a white piggu or be an AEW wrestler. Both winners of last year's tournaments are in AEW right now.
Yeah, I think there's a word for it...

I get it. Callum Newman is probably gonna be in America by this time next year, you can't make the same mistake you made with Gabe. If you're gonna draw money with him, you have to do it right now.

But holy shit, if he was gonna win, could he at least do it as something other than yet another cheating heel?

2 things
>alarming descending gaijin quality
>they need to push their own Japanese wrestlers

you can't build a promotion around an outsider or concepts like HOT, you just can't.
>>
>>20129598
i honestly think their roster is in a very solid state at the moment, their is a few factions id personally change but its all preference.
the other day i mapped out who i think the 20 participants for G1 will be this year (including takeshita cause theres no reason to think he wont be in again) and i think they are in a good spot for fresh new talent really starting to hit their stride meanwhile having people like Ishii, Goto, Shingo and Zack benefitting from facing and creating stories with this new pool of wrestlers.
>>
>>20129622
i disagree with rapidly descending quality as they were pretty much all vastly different wrestlers who had their own niche.
i get the worry about not pushing the native wrestlers, but NJC has always been a tool to push a guy to that top level without comitting to them winning a g1 which in my mind is clearly reserved for either Yuya or Shota this year.
it also establishes another top heel wrestler that isnt a HOT member which was desperately needed in the current landscape.
the NJC this year was never about them crowning Yuya or Shota winner in a breakout tournament it was about adding a wrinkle to their arc before G1 when both of them ultimately stumble out the gate but meet each other in the final.
>>
>>20129595
He should have been a top player in the division since his return but they obviously want to put more focus on the young guys so it is what it is. Also everyone gets at least 8 points in bosj so it doesn't really matter

No. The one you screenshotted and the one in Korakuen with the Jrs are the only ones being streamed live for this tour. And no, you really dont have to. This is essentially the touring schedule where they have a minor show in certain regions to gear those local fans up to see the tour closers like Sakura Genesis. Something MIGHT happen on the minor shows like Ibaraki they stream, but its not really worth it if you're not in the mood.
