I'd really like to see him get a masked gimmick ala Lord Humongous or Kane. I think he'd be good at it and it would be something different. And if it doesn't work, he can just go back to being Gunther.He's just doesn't have a lot of personality and the further they get him away from being the guy who has good matches each week, the less over he will get. Some people benefit from wrestling more often on TV than others and he's definitely one of them.
Breaking up Imperium was the thing that hurt him the most, it might've just taken awhile for people to feel it, having lackeys does a lot for establishing someone as a big deal. Gunther is unironically best when he’s putting over younger, smaller, more athletic talent.His recent matches with Jevon and Dragon Lee were pretty good. Not “because” of Gunther, mind you, but because Gunther is a big broad slow boring heel canvas on which more athletic flippy guys can paint. Gunther is good when he can be an Ivan Drago character fighting a bunch of underdog Rocky types. By contrast, Gunther is at his worst when the goal seems to be getting himself over by facing other slow boring old guys like AJ, Yeetman, and Cena.The Seff match at WM will almost certainly be terrible, because at this stage of Seff’s career (and especially coming off an injury), he’s not going to be able to carry the energy and excitement like the young flippy guys do against Gunther.
