I looked into the Vince vs World Wildlife Fund thing earlier in the year. What I got from it was that Vince basically broke the deal they had set up, The Fund kind of turned into the ex who wanted to keep the dog and Vince just got sick of dealing with them so he changed the companies name to WWE.

There's no real reason to change the name back to WWF at this point. Whatever the name is, people know what it is. The biggest consequence out of that whole thing is that WWE seemingly never released a lot of old footage because of it and had to blue/censor WWF logo's and namedrops on shows.

My pet theory is that Vince knew the name change was inevitable and telegraphed it when the company went public ("WWFE"), but wanted to avoid any humiliation of doing so while WCW was still an active competitor. I don't think he actually cared about the name otherwise, it's still the same product to him.
