Punk isn’t even supposed to be champion. They booked him to take it over Yeetman when Seth had to vacate after injury. Then presumably, Bron Breakker was supposed to have it until he fumbled his opportunities and then got hurt. In terms of the stories they wanted to tell, Punk is like Plan C anyway. If he keeps the belt or loses it tonight, it doesn’t matter.

Roman, like Brock, like Taker, is all about aura. He doesn’t need a title or give a shit about having it. He won’t be around every week after this regardless, win or lose.

This match is billed as a standalone personal vendetta match. Nothing more. The belt is only relevant to the extent that whoever has it sets up whatever they want to do next.

If they care about telling a story that goes somewhere (a big IF after last night), my guess is they’ll book Roman to win so he has the belt for tomorrow night on Raw when they launch the Roman v Oba feud (after Oba beats Brock).

If they don’t want to start Roman v Oba yet, then the reason to keep the belt on Phil would be so he can lose it to Bron Breakker soon so they can start building the Seth v Bron title match they wanted to do 6 months ago.

In short, it literally doesn’t matter who wins. One of them gets bragging rights over the other, I guess? It matter what HAPPENS, but it doesn’t matter who wins.
