The problem isn't self inserting the problem is self inserting WITHOUT the idealised presentation and exaggerated OTT archetype. When "he's just like me" becomes too literal and you've got a bunch of insecure anxious guys of average height & build who could pass for half the fans in the crowd, whose personality is they like the same pop culture & politics as the fans, who talk about the same things as the fans in the same way at the same time and don't do anything to be larger than life. And that's not just about booking them in segments & angles that follow the power fantasy story, it's about them actually looking & acting larger than life.
