Why come WCW came so much closer to dethroning the king than TNA and AEW did?
What did Billionaire Ted do right to make Vince quake in his shoes, that the others failed to do?
>>
>>20410269
WWF wasnt a mega-corporation back then, so it was easier to challenge
>>
>>20410269
>>20410278
WCW was actually good. And it was formed from the ashes of Jim Crockett Promotions which had absorbed several NWA affiliated territories by the mid 1980s. WCW officially formed in 1988 but its foundation was in JCP and the NWA and can be traced back to the first Starrcade in 1983. And that was before WWF began its big push to go national in 1984 with its MTV affiliation, Black Saturday, etc.
>>
>>20410269
WCW had better booking and a lot more star power than TNA, plus AEW hobbled themselves by embracing the far left. AEW has the "near-infinite money" factor and TNA had that good oldschool feel at first, but neither of them are capable of being #1.
>>
>>20410278
This and all the guys who made WWF huge in the 80s, went to WCW almost at the same time as each other. They were also closer to their peak selves than years later in TNA when everyone was tired of them (from failing in WCW)
>>
WCW was really not in WWF's league outside of the MNW. They didn't draw well and they were only on cable, which a lot of people didn't have until the mid-90's.

But then a few things happened. The steroid trial caused the WWF to fire half their roster and Vince was too involved with that stuff to get creative right. All the Hulkamania era stars got older and new stars had to be made. The new stars didn't hit. WCW took most of Vince's creations and got new fans from them.

WCW then started running Nitro as the main show against Raw. It was all regular matches with main eventers fighting every week while Raw mostly had taped squashes. And squashes were awful to watch week after week as they were boring and predictable. WWF changed this quick, but it made a difference.
>>
>>20410269
WCW had stars that people knew and cared about.
>>
>>20410303
>plus AEW hobbled themselves by embracing the far left.
aew fans want to discount this but it's a huge factor. Like I'm not going to watch any promotion that bans Hulk Hogan and goes around chanting fuck ICE

For as dumb as wrestling audiences can be, crowds back then were more aware of various companies and willing to try watching them. Also, as >>20410296 pointed out, WCW was formed from a lot of companies in the first place, so their audiences went into WCW a la WWF's expansion. >>20410342 and >>20410378 sum it up from there. As for why modern companies struggle to reach WWE's numbers, modern wrestling audiences grew up in nearly 20 years of a monopoly that sought to make the company itself seem like wrestling as a whole. Because of this monopoly and WWE aggressively pushing itself in advertising during that time, modern crowds might genuinely be unaware of the alternatives or otherwise have hang-ups in regard to trying anything else, often thinking any alternative might be synonymous with a bingo hall. TNA TNA'ing itself may also still linger in their minds or they've heard stories about what a mess that company became. Modern audiences are less bright even with the amount of smarks online nowadays too, and they think that if they quit watching WWE then they've somehow abandoned wrestling as a whole. Combine these details with the monopoly and TNA's history and you get a situation where a portion of WWE's viewership is like a zombie audience that struggles to learn about alternatives and refuses to think for itself or check anything out even if they think WWE has sucked for years.
>>
>>20410411
same here. I wanted to like AEW and I gave it multiple chances, but each time they chased me away with leftyfag bullshit like that.
>>
>>20410607
what the fuck is up with the current fandom using "bingo hall" as an insult? the only fed that actually came out of a bingo hall was ECW, which was actually one of the most successful indie wrestling companies ever. ECW's influence on wrestling was huge, without them there would have been no boom period in the 90s. ECW supplied all the raw material that built the attitude era and created a ton of new stars at a time when it wasn't easy to do that. the real jabroni feds are usually running high school gyms or tiny community centers. that bingo hall in philly was actually a decent mid-level venue and remains so to this day.

I still can’t believe they unmasked all their luchadors. Fucking retards
>>
>>20410269
It's because TNA and AEW aren't offering a different style of wrestling from WWE.
WCW's southern wrestling was noticeably different.
The Attitude Era only got to happen because Steve Austin and other southern territory style wrestlers got the free reign to wrestle that way, together with other guys like Bret Hart who could keep up with that change of pace.
But by the time the WWE wrestled that way, WCW was beating them in the ratings, riding high on the reputation of having done wrestling properly for over a decade already even if the storylines sucked in the early 90s.

TNA today is just another WWE, and AEW is just another WWE with a focus on Vince Russo style booking.

I can tell you have never watched AEW in your life before.
>>
Welp
>>20410756
>>
>>20410411
>>20410303

Sure, AEW is leftist, but they still actually have bloody matches unlike WWE. It's very funny to watch MIGAtards clutch their pearls on Twitter over some blood split.
>>
AEW never had and is never going to have a real chance to take WWE down, the gap in money is simply too big and AEW can never close it because WWE's position at the top of the industry is so entrenched.

The only way it was EVER possible for AEW becomes the number one company is if WWE dies in a self-inflicted way, like if TKO sells it to somebody who strips it for parts.
>>
>>20410607
>and they think that if they quit watching WWE then they've somehow abandoned wrestling as a whole.

Someone did this a few weeks ago. I gave them names of about 60 different promotions that had free youtube channels. I doubt that person watched a single thing. I've had same conversation many many times.

For whatever reason, there is just a general sentiment in the US that the viewer is lowering himself to watch anything but the top league in various sports. True, indies can be indies. But if you are quitting wrestling over WWE or AEW being good, what is there to lose?

>>
there didnt used to be this overwhelming hatred for whatever company you didnt like as much. maybe some retarded concave brained NPC normies were like that, but wrestling fans were happy to watch any wrestling. but ppl are going to watch whatever show is better. for a period Nitro was indisputably better than Raw, and they were on at the exact same time, so ppl chose to watch Nitro over Raw

>WCW was formed from the ashes of Jim Crockett Promotions which had absorbed several NWA affiliated territories
>>20410607
>For as dumb as wrestling audiences can be, crowds back then were more aware of various companies
i always find it weird how nowadays ppl have to know everything about every character in every show they watch or they can enjoy it. Like in wrestling how ppl say they're lost if they dont know whi a character is. when who they are may not have anything to do with what is happening on the episode they're watching. this idea that ppl in the past were dumber is a meme and ppl in reality keep getting dumber cause they keep getting spoonfed and intellectually coddled
>>
>>20410822
I mean, think of it this way, do you know anyone who watches minor league professional sports regularly? Even minor leagues that will bring in someone from the majors for a period of time?

I'm talking stuff like AAA baseball or the NBA G League.
>>
>>20410831
>too stupid to understand WHY there is such a huge gap in revenue
get woke, go broke. and your side has no room to talk about having your delicate sensibilities offended lol. you faggots flip out if someone uses the wrong pronoun, I just dont want to watch a company that supports my deliberate ethnic replacement or the genital mutilation of children. those are real and serious moral wrongs, and they will continue to be resisted by any means necessary.
>>
>>20410669
Also WWF was giga based when it was in those small venues. Like the OG Raw eps or the eps of Shotgun Saturday Night. The small venues is when wrestling started being cool and having crazy ppl in the crowds
>>
>>20410882
I can't say I do, but those same people will go watch college and high school ball and that I don't get either.
>>
>>20410805
the indies are much better if you want deathmatch stuff, as is the japanese deathmatch scene. im not watching AEW ever again for anything in the world.
>>
>>20410896
You can not watch a TV show for whatever retard schizo reasons you want. But to act like AEW would make as much money as WWE if it was just run the exact way you want and pandered to your exact sensibilities is delusional beyond belief.
>>
WWF was at a low point creatively and were pushing out old stars for budgetary reasons and were failing to make new ones. WCW had the money to scoop them all up. They also went head to head with RAW with a live show where as raw was taped, sometimes looked like complete shit. What’s so funny about bischoff giving advice to Tony or thinking he could have turned tna around is that WCWs success was completely circumstantial.
Like imagine if at the lowest point of Roman’s forced push, there was a new promotion that had Cena, Orton, Batista, Brock and Angle. And also wwe no longer did live television and dipped all their cameras into vaseline.
By the time TNA was on tv, there was no space for wwe-lite. They might have been able to gain more traction if they had tried to be an alternative, either fully embracing the super junior style of the x division or having a more traditional southern presentation. But being the place that gave Orlando Jordan a second run was not going to get the job done.
>>
>>20410906
absolutely. I hate arena shows, mid-size venues like the louisville gardens were the sweet spot. big enough to be relevant but small enough to maintain a comfy feel.
>>
>>20410926
we dont know exactly what would happen if AEW were run exactly like WWE, so theres no point in speculating on that. but the real delusion is you AEW fans failing to realize that certain political issues are too divisive for a wrestling show and will chase off a large percentage of the audience. nyla rose is the primary thing that sent AEW to the no-milly club where they have lived ever since. that big wembley show was a serious high point, but of course punk ruined it by advocating for child abuse and now they will never run a show that big again. tell me something, why do you think tony converted away from islam? answer: because he's a faggot.
>>
>>20410269
back then WWE didn't pander to kids and retards exclusively
now it's more like disney or marvel, and unless you want to make a product that is boring dog shit that won't scare man children that just want to collect toys and do 90s nostalgia you're never going to compete with them. but that's fine because big tone doesn't need the money, so he can focus on making wrestling show that normal people (not 8 years old, not retarded, not scared of their own shadow) can watch casually.
>>
>>20410977
No one outside this board and chasers know who Nyla rose is. And most dynamite watchers just assumed she was an ugly biological woman. You’re obsessed with trans people and it’s not healthy.
>>
>>20410926
you sound a lot more offended and angry than I am. I simply choose not to watch a program that advocates for national treason and white genocide. those are unpopular positions and its about time you marxists stopped trying to bully people into supporting things that go against the basic moral fabric of our society.
>>
>>20411009
I never cared about troons until they started becoming the very same kind of bullies they complain about. they chose this path and so theyve chosen all the hate that goes with it. and yes, tranny shit is one of the main reasons that the left largely fell from power. its very very easy to campaign against someone who advocates for child abuse and the end of free speech. how do you think trump got so many mexicans to vote for him? I bet youre still scratching your head on that one so I'll clue you in: most of the mexicans who are here legally are devout catholics and are also very protective of their kids. you went after both those things and paid the price. learn your lesson or youll pay it again.
>>
>>20410822
>>20410882
In the case of pro wrestling, it's not even a matter of major leagues vs. minor leagues, they operate as two parallel leagues aiming for the same heights.
>>
>>20411048
You think trans people are sending you threats through your alphabet soup. Get a life
>>
>>20411139
>has to resort to a ridiculous straw man because he has no real response
concession accepted. now go seethe and dilate.
>>
WCW was challenging WWF when it was at its most vulnerable, TNA was doing it when their high mark as a company had admittedly passed but was still in fresh memory, and AEW was doing it after everyone either thought WWE was a pure monopoly on the sport or saw TNA shit themselves and didn't really want to bother with alternatives
>>
>>20411021
You can not watch a TV show for whatever reason you want. The subject at hand isn't "why some random guy isn't watching AEW", it's why AEW hasn't gotten close to supplanting WWE, relatively to WCW in its prime. And the reason for that is because WWE was already a multi-billion dollar company when AEW started.
>>
>>20411156
I’m not responding to your “points” cause I didn’t read them lol
>>
>>20411185
then you are admitting that those points are correct. the high ground is mine and I have captured your flag. thanks for playing.
>>20411169
yeah and Tony Khan started with a massive fortune as well, which he didn't earn by the way. he has more than enough money to compete with WWE, he just doesn't have the intelligence or the killer instinct to do so.
>>
>>20411281
that's very interesting but you watch a PG show for kids
>>
>>20411287
LOL i dont even watch WWE, you make that assumption just because I don't like AEW. I like a few different feds, and neither WWE or AEW is among them. you try to gaslight people into a false choice between two things that suck equally, and Im not buying it.
>>
>>20411281
That is true only in the most literal sense that Tony Khan could spend tons of money to fuck with WWE by offering ever meaningful free agent 8-figure contracts, blocking them out of arenas, etc., but this would be an incredibly irresponsible way to spend his money and run his business. Rather than win some fictional pissing contest with WWE, he's focused on running his own company, something he has been objectively successful at.
>>
>>20411333
tony khan has only had marginal success because he went into the game with an infinite money mod. without that silver spoon in his mouth he would be shoveling shit on a farm somewhere in pakistan. if I had that kind of money I could take WWE down because Im not some pussy little rich kid that never had to fight anyone. why play a game if you dont play to win?
>>
>>20411347
>if I had that kind of money
Your entire mindset would be different. Probably be just like Tony Khan.
>>
>>20411347
>tony khan has only had marginal success
He's the most successful wrestling promoter of all time not named Vince McMahon.
>why play a game if you dont play to win?
Because he wants to run a successful wrestling company for a long time. "If you're not first, you're last" is child-brained logic and is the exact kind of reasoning that, ironically, wound up killing WCW.
>>
>>20411381
that would probably depend on whether I earned my money or if I simply inherited it. but in any case, I stand by my statement. if I had tony khans level of money, I would put my foot on the neck of WWE and never ever let up until they were dead. thats what vince did, and thats also how turner almost beat him. tony doesnt have the balls to do what has to be done or even to tell people no.
>>
>>20410269
A combination of the WWF reloading from the New Generation and the NWO storyline start
TNA didn't and AEW doesn't have anything close to have a reason for joe normie to tune in. You need to have booking substance behind the names you bring in
>>
>>20411395
We're talking about someone who inherited it.There's no "well, it depends". If you inherited it, you'd mostly likely be the same. Coddled and autistic
>>
>>20411387
lol jim crockett was ten thousand times the promoter that tony khan will ever be, and he contributed ten thousand times more to the business than tony ever will. money doesnt make you better.
>>
>>20411416
I didn't say "better", I said "successful".
>>
>>20411413
maybe so, but its a moot point because I wasn't that fortunate. and I reiterate, if I had half the opportunities that a guy like tony has had, WWE would be my bitch. WWE has been in decay for decades, it's not that hard a demon to slay. the only reason it doesn't happen is because all the promoters these days are nutless faggots who arent willing to go to war.
>>
>>20411437
>maybe so, but its a moot point because I wasn't that fortunate.
You brought it up lol
>>
>>20411425
Crockett drew more dimes in a year than Tony ever has. maybe because crockett knew how to book, how to build a story, how to build a star, and how to keep his fed out of politics. Tony fails at all those things. also, I would bet that Crockett had a higher profit margin because he wasn't overpaying for two rosters packed mostly with overpaid shitters.
>>
>>20411437
yeah and i bet if things hadn't been so unfair for you back in the day, you'd be running a fortune 500 company instead of the fry machine at McDonald's too
>>
>>20411387
>He's the most successful wrestling promoter of all time not named Vince McMahon.
He says in a WCW thread. WCW was on top the wrestling world for a time that's something Tony has never done.
>>
>>20411445
no you brought it up in response to a different statement. are you a fucking bot or something?
>>
>>20411464
we aren't talking about me, your silly attempt to make this argument about me is only an indicator of your desire to shift the subject. trannies are anti-dimes and are the main thing holding back modern wrestling from another boom period. normal people turn the shows off when they see that shit and thats why Tony and his fed will be forever dimeless. WWE is fucking up worse than ever and yet Tony STILL can't overtake them, it's fucking pathetic.
>>
>>20411487
>we aren't talking about me
sure we are, you're the genius that would change wrestling if only someone would have given you the opportunity. what's stopping you, fatso? go make an indy, there's plenty of bozos that will still work for nothing. surely you know everything, in a few short years you'll be on TV yourself and can show hhh and tony how it's done. can't be that hard right?
>>
Didnt crockett tell new jack to draw heat with the oj stuff
>>
>>20410269
Let’s not forget that they DID dethrone WWE. WWE were on the backfoot and getting hammered in the ratings. It’s only when WCW started fumbling, relying on celebrities and cheap finishes, and WWE had a product that appealed to true wrestling fans did the crown fall off. Parallels to modern day.
>>
>>20411461
That is just not true. Crockett has not drawn anything even remotely similar to any of AEW's television deals, if he had, he wouldn't have gone out of business.
>>20411468
That company is dead. And their most successful stretch probably generated less money than one year of AEW's current TV deal.
>>
>>20411469
>no you brought it up
>>20411347
>if I had that kind of money
Take your meds.
>>
>>20411469
You said "If I had that kind of money" in response to me saying something about Tony Khan. You are the one who brought it up.
>>
They got Hulk Hogan
>>
Ted just played Vince at his own game. Vince in the 80s bought every major wrestler from the territories, and that killed the territories as Vince had all the stars while NWA had none.

Ted just did that. He bought out all of WWF's stars, so he had them all while Vince had none. And that eventually forced Vince to start making home grown new stars for the first time ever, in Austin and Rock. That was Ted's downfall he never did that, he just relied on the now ageing 80s stars.

its simply a hypothetical statement, and I don't think I'm the only one who could take down WWE with the amount of money and resources that tony has at his disposal. I think there are probably lots of other people who could do it, but none of those people are likely to get the opportunity because of nepobabies like tony.
>>

I'm not arguing with your hilarious delusion that you could take down a billion dollar company. I'm simply pointing out that the other guy you were talking to is not the one who brought it up, you are.

Bischoff actually did have a few strokes of genius. Its hard to believe because his luck ran out even during the days of WCW but I always thought he at least had a decent enough mind for the business. He just needed to be reeled way in and not be given the books as much as he was allowed both in WCW and TNA. The guy also still to this day remains the best GM WWE ever had on any of their shows.

The mainstream accepted answer of Hogan forming the nWo and going heel though really did make that much of a difference. Wrestling needed something fresh and at that time this shit was better than literally anything the business had going on anywhere.

Russo is the reason they lost their best TV deal back in the day which was on Spike TV. They literally never recovered since then. TNA has never ever reached the peak that they did during the days when Hogan and Bischoff were around. So for better or worse, they did seem to have at least some sort of a positive effect at bringing in some eyeballs at the very least. Russo was far more of a one trick pony and he's never been of any value to any company outside of a small portion of WWF's history. Russo and his ideas are way too out of date at this point and he'd bury any company that was stupid enough to make him a head writer.
