5STAR GP 2026 - Day 1 ThoughtsFinally finished up all the opening night matches for the 5STAR and am left nothing but impressed.On paper, the actual GP matches lacked what you'd maybe call "big name" matchups, but instead delivered by letting the midcard and lower card wrestlers stand out in their own way. It wasn't repetitive, and rather, I thought everything had a bit more identity. I loved that.Aya Sakura vs. HANAKO takes my match of the night, and I'm simply left amazed by how amazing Aya is as a babyface and wrestler. Her fire and spirit are second to none in this promotion, and she's right there with Rina for my favorite wrestler in the promotion. I thought this was the best of her and HANAKO's series, not only because Sakura won, but because of how meaningful it felt. This wasn't just a match, but more so a fight, with the win meaning that much more. It was really wonderful, and I'd go as far as calling it GREAT! I want Aya to qualify for the playoffs so much this year.Elsewhere, I thought Kurara kicked off what I predicted to be an MVP-level run by giving Akira Kurogane one of her best career matches to open the night. Just physical, to the point, and a great payoff in the end. Kurara, to me, continues to prove why she was the right choice to dethrone Kamitani.Just really enjoyed most of the other action throughout the night, with my last main thought being that Mei Seira rules and needs to face Suzu for the world title.
