Jail Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

A night of drinking and a failed attempt to cheat on cards had landed you the strangest job slash community service sentence you've ever had: ensuring Gongalla Gaol survives the reality storm called Singularity.

Now you travel around with your employer and a handpicked crew to survey the four Reality Anchors. Hey, beats being tarred and feathered, right?

You are Rosa Montagni, and after the successful cult roundup operation at Pinewatch, you've headed north towards the direction of the Reality Anchor. Alas, inclement weather greets you as you went - crevasses, flashfrost, and even a Dammerlicht batter your chartered autowagon. Just when hope seemed to be snuffed out by the Dammerlicht, you and your crew were saved by the Lady of the Pines, who deposited you near a cabin.
Your two hosts turned out to be the goddess Skadi and her wife - and that her Reality Anchor was just a short walk away. While Nemo went to check the anchor, you entertained Skadi by cooking up one of grandma Ko's recipes - but the special ingredient you added, grated duplicate relic, caused almost everyone's sins to pop out as their doppelganger of sorts. Of course it's up to you to fix this mess...
>>
>>6274911
Right, Valencio has handled his duplicate, you've conscripted yours to help with the situation for the moment, and Craig's got reabsorbed after you did an improptu goblin sex ed class. Purely spoken, of course. Now that you've got Nemo up to date, you turn your attention to Skadi's double - who is still gobbling up the murderchicken legs, and is now twice as big. Maybe even two and a half, now.

"Eh... this might be a problem, eh."

Happy-go-lucky Skadi muses, as if her double's size is no cause for alarm.

"How'd she get so big?!"

The goddess shrugs.

"Well, in the old days of time before time, being winter also means you're also hunger. That's just how it is, eh."

"So in short, that's your gluttony?"

"Yeap."

Great, a winter goddess' gluttony. How are you even going to tackle this? You hope your double - your greed - has better luck trying to deal with Ling and her duplicate.

Before you can think up a rudimentary scheme, however, Nemo taps your shoulder.

"Hey Rosa, is your duplicate supposed to do that?"

Confused, you follow his pointing finger to see your greed becoming the recipient of kisses from both Lings.

"WHAT."

"I believe the term is snogging, yes?"

Oh yeah, real helpful, Nemo.

"Ladies, please, one at a time!"

You don't know if your double is pulling a con over the two Lings, or actually enjoying being the target of their... ehm... compassions. Unbelievable! You've just finished explaining consent to Craig just a few moments ago!

Anyways, which problem are you going to tackle first, and how?

A goddess' gluttony is more immediately dangerous, you figure - so you put your brain to work. You figured that her hunger stems from an age of scarcity - even more so than early Gongallan prisoners. So you turn to Skadi and her gluttony, confidence raised.

"You know what? It's not time before time anymore! You've got a working infinite larder now - which means that you can eat anything, anytime. So stop stuffing your face! No need to rush eating, your foodsource is guaranteed."

The gigantic, hungering side of Skadi stops in her shove-em-all-in buffet as the goddess proper listens with a smile. A moment later, Skadi's gluttony started shrinking, eventually dissipating into thin air.

"Oyo! I've never had anyone best my hunger that way before. Looks like Nemo chose the right crew, eh?"

Skadi seems to be very impressed with you - but too bad, you now have to wrangle your greed from the sensual clutches of the dual Ling.

"And as for you, c'mere for a bit."

"'Scuse me, ladies..."

Grasping her (your own?) shoulder firmly, you hope she gets the message.

"I really, really hope you're just trying to con ling and her lust, otherwise I'm having second thoughts about you..."

To her credit, her confidence seemed to be unwavering, despite your threat.

"Well, I mean, 200 scrips per kiss is mighty tempting..."

Damn, girl - while that is indeed a mouthwatering price, she should've calculated her self-worth into the situation. What method do you think is best used on your greed?

Might I yet again suggest we pistol whip the shit out of Ling too? She doesn't seem to be giving a single care about actually dealing with this shadow and is actively encouraging it.

Also, I just don't like her.
>>
>>6277358
I mean think about it, do you have any idea of how gross what she's doing is if you think about it?

Imagine if Ling was some ugly dude trying to bribe rosa's GREED SHADOW into doing lewd stuff with him? Everyone would be apalled and call him a degenerate weirdo. But because she's a woman it's okay?
>>
>>6277373
>Everyone would be apalled and call him a degenerate weirdo.
Last quest's main love interest explicitly WAS a degenerate weird.
>>
>>6277388
The difference is that there, Petunia doing her shit was explicitly a bad thing that she had to redeem herself for and improve over.

Everything she did with James was consensual. I mean, the first thing he did after beating her was flirting and carrying her bridal style.
>>
>>6277390
Hit post too early, I was going to say that while Petunia actively got flak for being a shameless lecher (though honestly not NEARLY enough), Ling is doing this stuff despite knowing Rosa *isn't* interested.

So therefore, why not pistol whip her for it? Rosa sure as hell shouldn't have a reason *not* to do it.

Valencio did say that these sins can be beaten - literally or figuratively. You chose the former. Quickly gripping your revolver from your inventory, you brandish it in front of your greed.

"200 scrips?! Just 200 scrips per kiss?! What kind of lackluster price is that? You're no greed of mine! Now git, git!"

"But... but! Money!"

Blow upon blow rains upon your treasonous greed, and you swear with each pistol whip that lands she's shrunk more and more. Eventually she disappeared under your flurry of hits.

Then, you turn to Ling, who has been watching the onslaught from start to finish. Strange - her lust's gone.

"And as for you..."

Ling raises her hands in an apologetic way.

"I read you loud and clear, boss - truly, I apologize for the misconduct. Got carried away by my lust there."

"...as long as you understand that I don't swing that way, and that my greed is still part of me. Has she taken your money yet?"

"No... not yet..."

"Good. Keep it. Any deals with my greed are null and void."

You never thought beating your own sins would be so... draining. You just wanna slump to the ground and close your eyes, but you have a job to do. Speaking of which... you go and find Nemo.

"Nemo - please tell me the anchor's fine."

"There was some interference while I was checking it, but it should be good now."

"Good. Then we're done here. Let's get moving."

Nemo nods thoughtfully.

"So, where are we headed next?"

Hmm, there's only two places left to check - the war-torn West, which is under Durga's control, and the inundated East, which is the domain of Homusubi. Two deities you've only just learned a couple moments ago.

"And how are we going to get there? Autowagon's all busted up."

Valencio brings an important point. The Dammerlicht outside is never going to go away - so it'll be hard to leave the cabin, let alone heading West or East. What do you think?

West... West holds painful memories. Sometimes you just want to forget. Sometimes you did, but only for a short while - that incident with your mentor keeps finding a way to worm its way back. You're not ready to face them again, yet. So you decided to go East.

"We're heading East. We'll have to repair the autowagon - I doubt we could get there on foot fast enough, and I don't want to impose on our hosts."

That, and you're not sure the Singularity cultists are all wiped out. Taking the train would mean a higher possibility of getting eyes on you - you'd rather take the less conspicuous route. And then there's that short complication with Craig looking at Astra too much. You suppose you'll head straight from this cabin in the Pale Yonder, and just keep going straight to the first Settlement of the East, Viridis. You plan on getting info there, on where the anchor is. As a side note, there's also Hexbourne Academy in the East, the magic school Craig wants to get into.

"That being said, Skadi, sorry to stretch your hospitality a bit further... we'll be stuck here until the autowagon's fixed."

Skadi nods and gives a thumbs-up in your direction.

"No worries, eh. Just ask, and I'll make you feel like home."

Later, under Astra's protective aura, you and Ling went out to check on the busted autowagon (which Astra has graciously and gently relocate to be closer to the cabin).

"Yeah, it's busted. Good thing nothing real important and irreplaceable got broken. Gonna take a week to fix."

Ling's been behaving since you've pistol whipped your sin. Guess that display really shook her.

"Better get to it, then."

This means you have a week to do... something. What would you do to kill the time?

It is actually high time you checked out the Reality Anchor - as well as getting some more answers out of Nemo. For example, how to check it and perhaps even fix it. You can't rely on Nemo all the time, you realize.

So you decide to take Nemo to the anchor - of course, with Astra to escort you through the permanent Dammerlicht that surrounds it.

"It's HUGE!"

"Yes, it is."

Indeed, after a short walk you see it, a black pillar that stretches from the ground to the infinitely high ceiling. Even Astra seems to be dwarfed by it.

"Are all the anchors like this?"

Nemo shakes his head.

"No, this is just Skadi's. If you recall, Sierra' anchor back in the Crack lies inside the crack in reality."

Ah yeah, back then you entered through a specially made doorway in the crack - which led you to Sierra herself. So logically, the passage-like entrance to Skadi's anchor would take you to Skadi herself, wouldn't it?

"Before Sierra, the South was supported by Tezcatlipoca - but he wasn't maintained properly, and caused an imbalance that threatens Gongalla. It took a couple to end his suffering - James and Petunia. Of course, your own grandpa, Gobson, helped them, although he didn't go into the crack himself."

You remember this story - grandpa Gobson always told you the story of how Raoul's grandpa and grandma saved Gongalla.

Before you know it, you find yourself inside the anchor.

"That's Skadi's true form, by the way."

Nemo's nonchalantness contradicts your speechlessness at the form before you. It was so dark, you can barely see; yet at the same time you see her. Gaunt. Emaciated. Asleep? No. Hibernating. Enchanting. Pitiful. Comfortable. Cool. Speedy, especially with those planklike footwear. She is many things that makes up Skadi - and yet, there is only a smidgen of hunger on her, not Ravenous kind of hunger, but more like a faint shadow of yearning. You wonder how you can feel all those aspects.

"Here, in the chamber of the anchor, you can feel if there's something wrong with it. Usually, it also tells you how to fix the anchor itself, if it needs fixing."

-----

You are temporarily Craig Snorlison, as Rosa is busy getting acquainted with the anchor's mechanisms. Currently you're engrossed in Skadi's story about Loki, who might be either her ex-husband or her brother-in-law. Or something like that. It just started when you were asking something about spirits.

"So that's Loki, eh. See, spirits are kinda like aspects of deities, legends, personas and personifications that 'floated off' on their own... you've got some bonded with you already, yeah? Well, treat them like people to gain a deeper bond!"

After that exposition, you feel like you've got a better connection with your spirits. And speaking of...

(Cont.)
>>
>>6281631
"Well, you heard her..."

Trickster says from behind you, seemingly afraid of Skadi.

"Indeed, all four of us are ready to deepen our bonds. Whichever one you bond deeper with, will give you boons."

Scholar says his piece, continued by Magos.

"But each of us has their own costs and demands... ones you must fulfill to gain access to those boons."

Finally, Watchdog caps the whole thing off.

"Choose wisely, pup. Only one of us can have a deeper bond with you. Are you ready?"

Well, are you?

Hmm, deepening your bond seems daunting - but you've got a goal set already.

"Scholar, I choose you! I wanna be smart, like Rosa!"

Yeah, Rosa can be a con artist because she's smart! And cool! Cool-smart! So you want to be assmart as her, at least!

"Very well. If you are to bond deeper with me, you will gain learning-based boons from me, such as deeper memory and sharpened analysis skills."

Oh nice!

"In exchange, you will read a book every day, minimal a chapter. Are you up to the task?"

Er, you've read through that grimoire you bought - although with the help of your spirits...

"Correct. Now you can read it by your own cognition. Form your own analysis, and decide on your own."

You know what, let's do it! You'll figure things out!

"Then, the pact is sealed. You will be as smart as Rosa - and a myriad other ways too, I assure you."

-----

It's six days later, and you are Rosa Montagni again. Ling had fixed the autowagon yesterday - but the process of replenishing your supplies took all day. It did get faster due to Skadi allowing you to gather ingredients from her infinite larder - which looks like a weird handheld mill with a crank thing, by the way. Cold-cooking and curing the meat from the larder really helps in preserving them, and Yukio helped a lot with her powers in that regard. But as always, it's time.

"So it's time, eh?"

Skadi and Yukio stood in the threshold.

"Yeah... thanks for everything, really!"

"Oho, it'll feel a bit less crowded in here, eh. But hey, you got a job to do!"

"Yeah, well, I'll just make sure to check up on the anchors again, won't I?"

Skadi smiles and waves back as you and the crew embarked on the repaired autowagon, going Eastward. Even the Lady of the Pines - Astra - spoke farewell as she escorted you out of the Dammerlicht, in her words made of starfire. Soon Skadi's cabin, the Anchor, Astra, and the Dammerlicht faded into the great Pale Yonder.

Your destination is Viridis - a town similar to Pinewatch, in the sense both are gateways to their respective Gongallan direction. But things tend to happen while traveling...

Presently, you are Craig Snorlison, and you are re-reading the grimoire titled 'Ouroborus Parable'. Not only to fulfill a pact to Scholar, but you feel a curious need to find out more about Millie's past. Indeed, as you read deeper into the tome, a chapter you haven't read before appeared! Titled 'Pale Fire', it doesn't concern Millie, but instead tells the youth of a rabbit named Orville. Living under the oppressive reign of the ULF, he and his twin, Wilbur, was captured and experimented upon - testing ways to remotely brainwash people. Wait a minute! Isn't this the rabbit who attacked Rosa, back in the cultist caves? What happens next? With ULF's reign ending in a war, the facility he's in was bombed. He managed to survive, but Wilbur didn't. Thus he escaped-

Hang on, you got distracted by a rather bright glint outside. Something blinked in the frozen wastes between the Pale Yonder and the East-

And then, that glint became a pillar of orange-blue light, with a roar like underground thunder. So powerful was it that despite the faraway distance, the autowagon was rocked by its vibrations.

"WOAH"

"What was that?!"

A sense of panic and confusion gripped the crew. They all saw, heard and felt that - it wasn't just you. Then, a moment later, the pillar of light just... dissipated. Gone as soon as it arrived.

"Boss, in my entire career as a driver, never have I seen something like that. And I've been to all four corners!"

Ling's attempt at discussing the event is reciprocated by Rosa.

"There shouldn't be any settlements over there... what is that? Some kind of magic spell or something?"

Valencio helpfully chimes in.

"That mana signature is something I've never felt before - no lone mage could've done that."

"Well, whatever it is, looks like we're safe. The autowagon's still running fine."

"Keep going, then. I'm not sticking around for an encore."

Rosa made the decision, one that everyone accepted without protest. On to Viridis...

-----

Another day's travel and soon enough you see the overgrown skyscrapers of Viridis starting to loom in the distance. The ceiling in East really do be higher, huh?

"Here we are - Veridis! Now, if you wanna go visit the islands, we hafta leave the autowagon behind - if we can't find a ferry, that is."

True, the East is mostly submerged under a spreading sea - you've heard from Rosa that the moving city, Freeport, went around in a circuit along the archipelago. But aside from that, there are also other smaller ferries and boats that ply these waters.

Well, the decision is yours, Rosa Montagni. Should you try and find clues about the East's Anchor here in Viridis? Or should you look into news about that pillar-like blast? Or maybe check when Freeport's coming by, last time you checked one of its boarding pases cost a fortune.

"I've decided, getting on Freeport is important to our misson. So let's head to the port!"

Passing several overgrown towers, you finally arrived at the port. Huh, it used to be more livelier than this - there's only a couple of boats moored at the piers.
That is, if you didn't count the commotion in front of the Freeport ticket house. A fat cat with a flat cap is trying to calm a small crowd down.

"Everybody, we are sorry, but we cannot sell tickets at this time!"

"What?! Why not?!"

Yells an exasperated fishman in yellow oilskin.

"C'mon guys, I have the scrips! Sell one to me!"

A young sailor tries forcing the issue. The fat cat talks again.

"We received news that Freeport's engines broke down for the foreseeable future, just yesterday. We still don't know when or if the engine will be fixed, so we cannot sell the tickets yet! Those of you with tickets scheduled for today, we can refund it in full..."

As the fat cat explains and apologizes, you hear a hyena captain muse out loud.

"Is it because of that pillar of light yesterday?"

A passing fox gives her two cents.

"I bet it's the gear vs magitek thing again!"

Well, well, well. Seems like the juiciest rumors are floating about, ripe for the asking. But then, how are you going to travel the East without riding on Freeport? Should you wait?

By the looks of it, the fishman is a local of Viridis - let's hope he isn't too irate to share some rumors.

"Pardon me, good fish - have you heard any new rumors in Viridis?"

The fishman turns towards you, apparently welcoming the distraction.

"Ahoy, you're travelers, aye? About to sight-see the East?"

"Yes, something like that."

"Aye, best way to experience the East is by taking the entire circuit on Freeport, but seems like they got engine trouble. That's real rare, mind you! In the meantime, you're stuck here on Viridis, unless you take the smaller boats. But it's safer on Freeport."

You've taken a ride on Freeport ages ago with your mentor, but it better suits you to act like the clueless tourist for now.

"Oh? Why's that?"

"Pirates and miscreants, roaming the water! Nobody knows where they come from, or where their base even is. That's why most of the East rely on Freeport for their cargo needs. Er - sorry, seems you caught me rambling. What is it you need again?"

"Oh, I don't mind - I'm looking to hear rumors around here."

"Aye, rumors really do bring the unique flavor of a place, indeed. Anyways, here are some things I've heard lately..."

As he rambles, you automatically pick up the gist of things from the rumors - and dispense with the dross.
It seems like the 'pillar of light' phenomenon sometimes happen in the East and nearby, the fishman calls it a ray-blast though.
There also seems to be strong and unique magical waves coming from the ceiling around these parts, at least according to a Hexbourne professor-mage that passed here.
Also from the same professor: there seem to be renewed friction between Gearists and Magitekists, rival aesthetic philosophies that are mostly prevalent among magic users.
Recently, the Church of Eternal End have sponsored dig sites all over Gongalla, although the only ones that got funded and operating so far are mostly in the East. There's one in Viridis, just north of the fish market.
Then, finally, he mentions that some Hexbourne dropouts have squatted in one of the overgrown towers in town, and sometimes cause trouble with their experiments.

After that deluge of rumors, you thank the fishman and took a stroll around Viridis. There's a train station, a bar, a hotel, a fish market, a digsite, the port, Jabberwock Group's office, and... hold on, is that...

"A casino?!"

Indeed, you've never saw this when you were here with your mentor. The Goldleaf Casino, it says proudly in its signages. You gotta be careful with your scrip in places like this - you've been known to lose big in other casinos. But, then again, casinos can be a font of information... and a game of cards can do no harm, yeah?

Before casino funtimes, however, you have a feeling that Freeport is going to take quite a while to fix - better figure out an alternate way to get around. Even though a part of you feels endeared to the autowagon, transporting it over water via ferry and riding it in these not-so-big islands sounds like a big hassle for little gain.

"Hey Ling, can you stay in Viridis with your autowagon for a while? The Freeport situation is gonna take a while, so we might rent a small boat to get around. Once we're done here we're hoping to ride with you again, to the West."

She just smiles her usual smile.

"Sure thing, boss. I'll be near the hotel, come look for me when you need my services again."

What a loyal gal, that Ling! Dubious orientation aside, you make a note to get Nemo to tip her generously. Speaking of...

"Heeey Nemo... I'm going to go gather some info at the casino, can I borrow a thousand scrip?"

If he is doubting you, his face betrays nothing.

"Sure, here you go. But bring Valencio with you, just in case. I'll be at the hotel with Craig."

Wow, a thousand scrip, just like that? Dunno if you feel glad or disappointed that you got it that easily. Anyways! Onto the casino, to gather scri- I mean, info...

-----

After a bit of walking, you and Valencio arrive at the casino. Trading your scrip for chips, you set your sight upon the Pokarcana table. Sure, there's plenty of other attractions here like the Flower Card and the Tiles venues (don't quite grasp the rules of both), slot machines (quick way to lose money, and you can't con it), and Wheel of Fortune (too random for your tastes). Oh look, there's a table with two seats open!

"You sure about this, Rosa? Someone like me..."

Valencio seems to be uneasy, for some reason.

"Yeah sure! C'mon, it'll be fun!"

As you two head closer to the table, the dealer politely refuses Valencio.

"I'm sorry, Goldleaf casino policy states that no masks are to be worn in the card game venues."

"What! Why?"

"Security and trust issues, ma'am. It's also harder to see if someone is having malicious intent if they're masked."

Valencio steps back.

"It's alright, Rosa, I'll be fine..."

>===POKARCANA RULES===

- Each player gets dealt three face-up cards
- Each player then pays an ante (minimum bet) into the pot
- Then each player gets dealt two face-down cards (only they can view)
- The players then can trade one or both of these face-down cards for freshly dealt ones
- After this, the players can call/raise/fold
- After betting are all done, the players reveal their hidden cards
- Best hand wins the pot

The deck has 22 major arcana cards and 56 minor arcana ones.
The Fool is the Ace of the major arcana (counts both as 1 or 23, after 22 The World).
Minor arcana has four suits (coins, crooks, knives, cups), each composed of number cards (2 to 10 + Ace) and face cards (servant, knight, queen, king).

Hands, lowest to highest:
- High Card/Nothing: no pattern, just take the value of highest card
- One pair
- Two pairs
- Three of a kind
- Run (a straight in irl terms)
- Suit (flush)
- Full house (three of a kind and pair)
- Four of a kind
- Running suit (straight flush)
- Major run (major arcana straight - due to their uniqueness, major arcana can only do straights)

Major arcanas are counted as higher than minor arcanas.

Valencio nods.

"Oh, alright. Is this good?"

You were not prepared for that face behind the mask. That's a different level of handsome you very rarely see in Gongalla, one which made your heart skip a beat.

"Yeah, sure... sure. That's fine, right?"

If the dealer was ever flustered at the sight of Valencio's face, she didn't let it break her professional demeanor.

"Indeed. The starting ante is five Scrips. New round starts soon."

You fork over the respective chip, and so does Valencio and the other two players on the table. You look at your hand's open card - not bad, a King of Crooks... but then you take a peek at your face-down cards, and internally frown. Yeeeah that's bad. Signaling to the dealer for two fresh cards, you curse your approximate luck - that King of Crooks stood in the way of a Suit hand. You decide to fold this round.

As the dealer shuffles the Pokarcana deck, you noticed that the girl next to Valencio is making small talk to him. That reminded you of your actual goal here: to find information! Time to engage in small talk with the winner of the last hand.

"Hey there, you're a lucky one, ain'tcha?"

"Uh, thanks. This is my first time playing Pokarcana... uh, in a casino, yeah."

"...those pillar blast things? Saw one of them while on the way here, what do you think of that?"

His face brightens up, as this stranger suddenly loses his nervousness.

"I think they have a peculiar sort of Vancian dispersal, where it actually negates any mana vorticii from occurring, which means it is both unelementalized magic and that it focuses all mana force along a single line, a vector if you will, that utilizes the Gaoli effect to do so..."

Most of that went past your head, but you know a magic nerd when they talk. As his analysis of the phenomena peters down (and the dealer finishes dealing your new hand), you turn to check on your cards.

Excellent! You have the Fool open, along with another major arcana - a good solid hand. If you discount the girl's one pair of 8s, that is - but you can bluff your way with this hand! A con artist like you can easily convince her you have a better pair hiding under your face-down cards-

But before you can declare a raise, the loud sound of the casino's main door being kicked open interrupts you. Turning around towards the entrance, you see two pointy-hatted figures commanding all the attention in the room.

"May we have your time?"

An arrogant, strict voice rang loud, despite the owner clearly not raising her tone at all.

A semblance of a plan forms in your mind - it's pretty likely that the guy next to you is Ezekiel, by the way he immediately shuts up about magic hullaballoo as soon as the twin witches entered. But first, you gotta secure the pot.

"Now, has anyone seen-"

"I call your bluff and raise! Ten Scrip!"

Good, you interrupted them before they could describe how Ezekiel looks. Not all of the casino-goers are as altruistic as you, after all. But soon you get two wands pointed at you as a reward for your trouble.

"What did you just say?"

"You dare resist us?"

Aha, got them! Their arrogance makes them hyperfocus on you, instead of the wider casino. They didn't even recognize Ezekiel next to you.

"Hey, come on, girls... I'm playing Pokarcana here! Now, aren't you two a rude bunch? You two look like Hexbourne students - I thought you'd be more cultured! Don't you know you gotta play something when you enter a casino?"

Well, you don't see a rule about it when you enter the casino, but there is a rule about loitering without playing, so technically what you said isn't a lie. It's not quite the truth, either.

But it seems to get the job done. One of the young witches sneers.

"Tch, so be it then, Caspia."

"Let's finish this quickly and find him, Carpathia."

They move towards your table, expecting you to give them your seats. But instead you turn to the girl next to Valencio.

"I'm sorry when you had a good time, but could you give your seat up? Thanks."

The girl nods and folds as she exits the table, and to Ezekiel's credit he also folds and left. Hopefully towards the backdoor. Valencio, taking one of your cues, also folds.

"Three players fold. Two players left. Two players enter. Pot goes to the green lady."

Gee thanks, dealer, you'll gladly take care of those 30 Scrips.

And here comes the cards. Your own hand starts strong with two face-up major arcanas, strong contenders in their own right. But it's the third major arcana in your hidden/face-down portion that's your trump card - the World. Second highest card than the Fool - if nobody else got pairs or straights or what-have-you. Aha, ball's in your court, now.

"Y'know what? How about if I win, you two help me look for the Eastern reality anchor? Or at least point me to someone who knows."

The twin witches look at each other a bit.

"And if we win?"

Hmm, you do need to offer something. Something that's almost equal in value - too little or too much will make them suspect you, their gazes still sharp despite their arrogant tone.

He can give them a lecture on tremors or church lore, they'd value that I bet.

A man who can make you quake, with a face like that? Who could say no?

Fortunately, you might have a suitable offering.

"Alright, tell you what - if you win, you can have a date with my friend Valencio here."

Mages or not, they are teenagers after all. As for Valencio, he just looks at you with a bit of 'eh' for a bit.

"Mmm..."

"He does look cute. Very well."

Seems your hunch was correct. Hexbourne's kinda strict, and these twin witches look like they haven't socialized with their peer enough. So of course Valencio would be a good enough distraction.

Joke's on them, though - you unleashed your winning hand at them. Immediately Caspia and Carpathia starts brandishing their wands at you. Er, not quite as planned.

"You tricked us!"

"You must be cheating!"

Thankfully, before you could live the rest of your life as a frog or newt (or worse), a booming voice came from the back of the casino.

"HOLD IT!"

You turn around to see the origin of that bass-boosted warning and see the biggest shark you've seen, wearing a three-piece coat and smoking a fat cigar.

"No roughhousing in MY establishment... capiche? Now that you girls understand, what seems to be the problem?"

This could be a good time to, say, twist the fact. Or say your piece...

I assume the idea here is to uh...defend them. We should be trying to defend them so they can give us our reward for winning.

A bit of a shame they didn't. Would have beem funny to see Valencio trying to stumble his way through a date.

As much as you'd like to excise yourself from the twin witches' presence, you'd rather do it without too much hostility.

"Oh... nothing! Just a bit of misunderstanding. They were looking for their friend, you see - said they're all Hexbourne students. I doubted they were really from Hexbourne, and they were eager to show off their wands."

The big shark takes a puff from his cigar, takes a look at you, and turned towards the student sorcerers.

"Hoo... did you girls not see the rules? Right over there, see? No. Hexbourne. Students. Allowed."

The shark accentuated the rules by jabbing his huge pointer at the twins, who are visibly and audibly outmatched in the intimidation department. The boss shark continues his warning.

"Run along, now... or word will get to your headmaster about your little incident here. You don't want him to be... disappointed at you, hm?"

With that, the synchronized strumpets hastily make an exit. Good idea!

"I think it's our cue to go, too..."

Barely a step towards freedom, and a palm that could easily grasp your entire head makes its acquaintance with your shoulder.

"Ah... not so fast. You'll stay awhile, won't you... Rosa Montagni?"

The way he says it all cool-like could be mistaken for an invitation for a date... if only both your goblin and orcish instincts aren't going five-alarms all over your mind. Has your past misdeeds caught up with you? Then again, he seems familiar... or is he?

Basically, hear what he's trying to tell, but if he tries to drag us to the back we're skedaddling the fuck out.
