Inside the underground city of Bauk, the air is sparse, the food small ration tablets that taste like nothing while the water tastes like iron, everything is dusty and cold and the only light is from precious filament lamps that flicker while moths fly to their deaths in it's warmth, a luxury you could never have. Humanity is buried, kilometers of tunnels and bunkers above your head, and the light of the sun is only a myth, told by the elders from a distant age before the surface was nuked and iradiated from endless centuries of war.
As just a youngling, at the tender age of 13, you once dreamed of seeing the surface, the warm light of the sun, fresh air that fills your lungs and clear water that chills you to the core, the scenery of trees, mountains, lakes, but those have since faded away into the harsh reality of scrapping by what little rations you have to live to the next day. But there's still hope for luxury, for a life that's not dusty and dry and cold, of clean clothes and a good bed after a warm bath, of real food and good-tasting water.
You want to be a [ red ]mercenary[ /red ].

Your name is Otto, just another unlucky kid from Bauk. Son of a metal processing worker and the owner of a small clothes selling booth, you've grown better than some, knowing the love and care of your parents even when the cold bit into your skin during the winter or when the pipes on the ceiling dropped sludge on your heads, but life was still tough even if you could always count with Mom and Dad.
They would be sad if they knew, their little boy dreaming of arming himself to the teeth and venturing outside to stalk through the tunnels in search of riches, knowing all too well that most in this path would die way before hitting it big, their lungs empty of air or their face eaten by some creature of the underground.
Mercenarias are the lifeblood of the underground, doing almost every dangerous task outside the limits of the city, be it transporting things from a city to another, harvesting and scavenging materials, or hunting dangerous beats that threaten to destroy your little sanctuary. And, unfortunately for you, to become one is not without costs.
You have some rations, maybe just enough to buy some things, but there will always be a sacrifice, something you're leaving behind, and th smile of the old vendor by the dusty streets only augments that feeling as he asks "what are you getting, kiddo?" in his equally dusty voice:

>Breathing Apparatus: A heavy assortment of cables attached to a gas mask that lets you breathe in ambients with low-oxygen or toxic gases for up to 8 hours per Can of Pop. Costs 7 Rations.

>Chemical Collector: A big box-like machina that lets you harvest liquids and gases and annalize their chemical compositions, separating the materials to be sold later for precious oxygen and hydrogen sources, only for a Can of Jolt per week of use. Costs 10 Rations.

>Plastimetal Shovel: A heavy tool of recycled metal and hardened plastic you can use to dig around in search of scraps you can sell. Also doubles as an improvised weapon. Costs 5 Rations.

>Plastimetal Pick: A metal tool of recycled metal and hardened plastic you can use to mine rock and ores and to break structures and walls. Also doubles as an improvised weapon. Costs 6 Rations.

>Spit Canteen: A small bottle with the capacity of turning 1 Can of Spit into 2 liters of potable - but bad-tasting - water. Costs 4 Rations.

>Zmaj V2 Fyre Pistol: A small gun still a little too big for your hands, a powerful tool for defense and intimidation by turning a Can of Fyre and 8 Plastimetal Bullets into death for your targets. Costs 14 Rations.

You don't need to buy everything now, surely, but you do need to start somewhere, even if seeing your hard-earned rations go so easily stings the eye.
The next question is simpler, but more important and riskier: where will you go, stalking around the tunnels for anything to bring you money, your first real step in using everything you've worked for until now to achieve your dream:

>The Mercenary Guild: You are young, but there are younger kids part of the mercenaries, and the cost of entry and the stares of amused adults will surely be worth the pain. Costs 2 Rations, gains access to Mercenary Missions. [Very Safe]

>Dusty Corridor Maze: By searching around the old passage corridors and its rooms, maybe you can find some trinket or material that's worth something? [Safe]

>Lower Pipe Labyrinth: It's hot and humid and bad smelling when you actually can breathe, but if there's a place you can scavenge liquids and gasses its there. [Risky]

>Lower Tunnel Forest: The biggest risk you carry while stalking the tunnels is of being attacked by some mutated beast, but what if you go hunt them first? [Very Risky]

Currently we're 13 and don't really know much about anything other than if we die it's over. We really should not be planning for any fights and at the first sign of trouble we should probably flee so for equipment I suggest
>Breathing Apparatus
Both because gas masks are really cool, and breathing is something Otto should really want to do
>Plastimetal Shovel
It's basic but shovels are extremely versatile
>Spit Canteen
Water is simply another essential that we can't forget.

This brings our nice 20 rations down to 4, which is tough but I feel is necessary in this situation. For where we go I think it's worth it to stomach the cost and humiliation and go with
>The Mercenary Guild
It's safer and has the possibility of getting us in contact with people who actually know a little bit about a couple of things, though I understand if other anons would rather go to the dusty corridor maze since going to the guild brings us to only 2 rations.
>>
Just an add, but I avoided describing the appearance of the character because I think maybe you guys would want to send images for it, so if anyone has any suggestion I'm all for it, just know Otto will probably collect a lot of scars along the way and won't be the small naive kid for long in this harsh dark world.

I personally was thinking of Otto Suwen when I typed the name, but I also think it can be a good idea to leave the MC's description vague in case anons want to headcannon his appearance. All male characters should have a gas mask or cool helmet on anyway.

I can't argue with that. Though I'm still a bit torn over classic masks or personalized ones like in Gashiakuta, but time will tell.

Going to start writing in 10ish minutes, just having a smoke and counting the votes.

You get out of the shop, the weight of your remaining rations saddening you a little as you carry the heavy breathing apparatus in your hands, the pick and plasteel canteen strapped to your body.
You stop at an old staircase, locking the apparatus to your body and putting the gas mask hanging at your neck before making your way to the Mercenary Hub, your steps sounding confident even if inside you are feeling like a lamb to the slaughter.
As you open the door to the place, eyes are attracted to you as every adult in the room turns to scan your small frame for any inch of weakness.
Where do you go to?

>The Reception Counter: Do your registration and go look at the missions, don't bother with the people around you.

>Group by the Entry: Approach the group of soldier-looking men, one of the motioning for you to approach them with his hand.

>The Cloaked Figure in the Corner: Approach the weird cloaked figure sitting in the corner of the room, a gloomy mood covering them.

This is prison rules, don't disrespect somebody unless you're prepared to fight them. Why would we walk up to some rando in the corner when someone is trying to talk to us? Absolutely antisocial behavior.

You walk forward at a quick pace, trying not to dwell too much on the stares or comments from the others in the room, as you quickly make your way to the cloaked figure on the corner.
They are hunched over, sitting at the farthest table as a gloomy atmosphere clings to their surroundings, and as you sit in the table besides them, they look up to stare at you.
Their face is obscured by a face mask, tired btown eyes and dirty blonde streaks of hair falling down from their hood as they try to understand what you are doing.
"What are you doing?" they ask, their voice dry and masculine but a little high-pitched, and you look back to see others finally stop staring at you. The stranger, though, is intrigued, and you try to think of an answer.

>"Hey, I'm Otto, I'm new here and I was wondering if you could help me with some questions? I just want to start the right way." +Questions

>"You looked approachable, sir, these other people look kind of fishy. I just want to register, I'll leave you be now."

>"You looked troubled, did something happen? I am new here, but I've heard it's important to make allies, so if you need help, I am all ears." +Medium DC Persuasion Check
>>
[SKILL CHECKS]

Skills checks are going to be 1d20+Skill against the DC, needing to score higher than it. Best of 3 unless said so.

Proficiencies give you +1, Specialties give +2 and Masteries give +3.

DCs are Very Easy (4), Easy (8), Medium (12), Hard (15), and Very Hard (18).

I'll make a pastebin with the character sheet later, but just know for now that you have a Proficiency with Persuasion, so the Check for that one option would be a 1d20+1>12. I don't remember if 4ching supports the "bigger than" operation, but we'll deal with it the best way we can.

Gonna ask questions on the assumption that we trust this guy and want a mentor relationship here but do keep in mind he could set us up for an ambush if we're too loose lipped.
>It's impressive that an old timer like you is still adventuring, you must have a lot of wisdom. (Flattery/Value Recognition)

>Do you have any problems at the moment? (Give + Possible Work)
>>
>Does the guild offer up any gear to newcomers once they're headed out on a mission or officially inducted?

>Any common creatures or groups of scumbags around we should lookout for?
