1244, La Forbie.

The hot winds swept across the sands. The last drop of strength left your body. Yet, you held on to your sword. The lumps around your face burned inside your helmet. Beside you were your brothers in arms, finally fallen after many years of suffering. Soon, you will die too, and the ordeals you've faced will be over. You look at your left arm across from you, resting on the ground. The world has yet to darken. You did not see the gate of heaven yet.

Death certainly came at his own leisure it seems…

Then you saw it.

A world swept by hellfire. Demons and soldiers of darkness invading the lands, spreading indiscriminate savagery. Amidst the black army, there was the king. A tall figure draped in dark cloak and clad in black steel, riding a black horse, wielding a mace crackling with blue sparks. The world swallowed by darkness, ruled with fear and heresy.

The vision ended, and a burning bush appeared.

“Your work is far from over, stand up. Protect the innocents and nurse the ill as you have done before. Rise,”

>William, Knight of Saint Lazarus

When you opened your eyes again, you woke up on a bed of soft green grass. The smell of trees and faintly sweet fruit. This… This can not be Heaven. Not after what you saw. The voice, the burning bush, if what you saw was real, your work was not over.

“Stay away damn you!”

You followed the panicked voices. Like your visions, men clad in black armor with tar skin chased a small family. You sprung into action and let out a bellowing war cry. These sickly creatures turned their attention to you. Good, the family can get away. You reached for your weapon, a

You reached for your weapon, an arming sword and a shield. The lord’s work must be done. Be it saracens or hellspawn, all would fall until your final moment. The hellspawns screeched as they charged. The sword hissed as you drew from the scabbard. The first creature flanked to your right, you side step the thrust of the spear and slash the creature’s throat. The second creature brought his arms up and brought down a mighty cleaver. You raised your shield.

Your kness buckle, but you persevere.

Rather, your strength carried on, you, the leper, who no longer had the strength that you once did. While not a surge of power, the change was palpable.

“Rrragh!” The hellspawn roared.

Your sword thrust through the hellspawn’s chest plate, and slid out with ease, just in time to see the last hellspawn walking, holding a battleaxe caked with blood and bits of hair. HIs movements were slow, you dodged each attack and kept at a safe distance. You hear more footsteps, the rustling of armor at a full sprint.

“Mak nim antam!”

The words of a hellspawn, a tongue uglier than a saracen. You will kill them all, or die trying, a fate of all knights. Their faces varied in its repulsiveness, flat noses, ears with warts, fangs, bony fingers, skin in dark and pale colors… Truly, they could only spawn from the deepest and muddiest depth of hell.

“Lord grant me the strength…” You whisper quietly, then charged.

The fight began. The familiar blur of battle whirred. Blades clashed, your heart thumped, but one by one each hellspawn fell. There was a spark, reminding you of your young self, back then when you thought you’d live to eighty after your first successful battle. Back then, you were called…

I'm curious, OP... When does the isekai part come in?
>>
Back then, you were called… Rainier The Wolf. While lion would have been a more fitting name, one of your brothers thought of a wolf first and the name followed.

“Morakah!”

The hellspawn surrounded you, with spears and axes. No matter how many you blocked, dodged, parried, and slashed, you were just one man.

Your heart trembled, limbs crumbling, whatever strength you regained drained away as you faced multiple combatants. You raised your shield and buckled your legs, blocking the cleaver. You flicked your wrist to parry the thrust from the hellspawn’s sword. The hellspawn behind you roared. The cold slashed across your back, tearing through your armor. You fall to your knees.

“There’s more of them like what they said!”

A familiar whistles of arrows flew. The hellspawns fell.

“Charge! Drive the demons back!”

The new reinforcements were the strangest group you’ve ever seen. One man was short and stout, holding a large axe. Another was a woman with long ears with dual daggers. There were more, those that would only exist in story books or a rambling of a madman.

“Maria, heal the knight’s wound!”

A woman knelt beside you and placed her hands over you. Her hands glowed in a soothing amber light. This had to be witchcraft. Yet… Can witchcraft have such warmth and rejuvenate you?

“Can you stand?”

You look up, and see the woman softly smiling, she wore armor over her habit along with a mace. A woman in battle, a sister no less…

“I can… Thank you.”

The sound of battle ceased, the group of fighters triumphed over the hellspawns.

“Let me help you.”

Maria pulled your arm gently. Your footing staggered, but you managed to stand.

"My thanks, sister."

“Where am I?”

She confusedly gazed at you. “You’re in the Tjora Forest.”

“In what kingdom?”

The gaze continued. “The Vale Empire. Are you sure you’re alright?”

“I’m…”

You gathered what you knew so far.

You were dead, then saw a vision, watched creatures fight hellspawn, and now healed by… Magic. This was not your home.

“Hey Maria!”

The party that fought the hellspawn in your stead approached. Their weapons gleamed, as did their armor. Upon closer look, they truly seemed odd and diverse. The short one with a long beard, like those pagans, spat at the ground, glaring up at you. The short man’s arms was thick as a tree log, and his beard was decorated with silver.

“I thought you so-called knights ran away, showing your face just in time to avoid humiliation?”

“Throm, he’s not a royal knight, look at his heraldry." A young man in simple chainmail armor. “That’s… Huh. Sir Knight, may I ask which order you hail from?”

“The Order of Saint Lazarus.”

The young man scratched his head. “I haven’t heard that one before. No matter, you helped us defend the town from the demons, thank you, Sir Knight.”

“I only have done what a knight should.”

The young man’s gaze softened. “Indeed, that is what a knight should be! Will you be returning to your order or to the town? I don’t see your fellow knights.”

“I am here as a… Knight Errant”

Lord forgive you for deception.

“I see!” The young man said excitedly. “I thought that tradition died a long time ago! A true knight!”

“Much as I like to hear you gush about knight.” The long eared woman said. “Some of us want to collect our pay.”

“Right, let’s get going.”

You followed your new acquaintances. The group consisted of the short man, woman with long ears, the young man, Maria, and a tall lizard man.

Before you parted, you let your acquaintances know to keep a safe distance and notified them of your illness, though leprosy was not contagious you still insisted on the distance. More surprisingly, your illness was not known, and you held off on showing your horrid skin. Thankfully, they still remained friendly.

You stared up at the lizard man. His scale skin gleamed under the sunlight, his tail swivel slowly as he walked. The lizard man wore tightly bundled multiple times into a strange gambison with feathers and pagan like totems hanging off of the clothes. The armor was also strange, bearing a light green color with symbols you have never seen before. Without the experience you went through, you would have tried to kill the lizard man on the spot.

“Something you need?” The lizard man said.

“I apologize for my gaze. May I ask where you are from?”

“And you’re a knight errant?” The lizard man said.

They must be a common race by his reaction. You notice his twin blades shaped similar to a sickle, not to mention the thickness of the blade.

“I believe it’s better to ask than to make an assumption.”

His slit pupil moved up and down. “That is a fair statement. I was born in Hsramlike all the other drazil, but I’ve chosen to be an adventurer to see the world.”

Adventurer? An interesting occupation.

“There is much to learn outside after all.”

“You’re smart for a knight.” The lizard man said. “I thought your kind were just nobles gorged on wine and meat.”

You’d protest his statement… If not for being true to a degree.

“The knights of Saint Lazarus seek to defend the innocents and caring for the ill. I do not know about others, but that is what my brothers and I did.”

The lizard man nodded. “This illness, leprosy was it? How do you get them if they are not contagious?”

“We do not know what causes it. Some say it is a curse to sinners…” You hold back a sigh. “They say tending to those sinners is why one becomes a leper, even if we are doing so to heal them.”

“They are fools then. What God would not want their people to comfort the ill?” The lizard man said.

A pillar of smoke rose above the sea of trees. As you got closer to the village, the sound of moans and cries echoed. The village’s gate were torn, homes ripped apart, roofs caved in, and the smell of fire lingered. The peasants shuffled, picking up debris or recovering what little they had. Despite the unfortunate but familiar scenery, this was an aftermath, not a scene of chaos. You quickly walk to the village.

“No matter where I go, war follows…” You mutter to yourself.

You searched where the wounded were, an easy task. The stench of death was easy to find, the location however, surprised you. Through the wooden double door of a moderate building, you first saw the cross on the wall. This… Made sense. Despite being in a new world, this was the world made by The Lord, having the holy symbols carry on in this world was certain.

“What brings you here Sir Knight, are you injured as well?”

Unlike Maria, this woman wore only the habit with a white apron stained with blood. Her eyes were sunken and her disheveled red hair was tied to a bun.

“Get lost you coward!”

A bandage roll hit your helmet. A boy with a bandage wrapped around his head held an armful of bottles and trash. Tears spilled from the corners of his eyes, brimming with sorrow and hatred.

“We don’t need you back!” Another patient said.

“Yeah, you ran away but now you’re trying to save face!”

More debris came at you. You raised your shield and pulled Emily in case she was caught in the attack. A man rushed through the wooden doors with an ax and a pack full of wooden logs. He ran past you and Emily and stretched arms to shield you.

“Wait!” A loud voice struck the room into silence. “This knight saved us!”

“Thomas, what are you talking about the, the royal knights—”

“He’s not a royal knight, look at his shield!”

The patients whispered to one another, finally realizing the misunderstanding.

“This man distracted the demons as my family fled. Lars, you know I’m no liar!”

You walked to the front, shield down to have your symbol shine. You look up at the cross, this must be planned by the Lord.

“And I am no Royal Knight you speak of. I am Rainier, Knight of Order of Saint Lazarus. I wish to help.”

Before helping Sister Emily, you first arrived at a secluded place and wrapped spare cloth from Sister Emily to cover your face. After many patients, one afflicted with a festering wound squirmed.

“Hold him down Sir Rainier!” Emily said.

Emily used a forceps to pull out what seemed to be a black arrow. A yellow puss oozed. A bloody scream ripped across the building.

“What’s happening to him?” You said, holding down the man.

“It’s a festering arrow!” Emily said. “The wound needs to be purified before being treated but we have no holy water or a cleric!”

Spit sputtered out as the man screamed. Poor soul. You knew pain all too well… You wished for the wound to heal and his mind, much like you have once— A light pure as snow shined. The thrashing man laid still. The wound slowly reverted back, as if time itself walked backward.

“S—Sir Knight!”

You stared at your own two hands.

“You… You have been blessed!”

“You… You have been blessed!”

You checked the man’s wound. The skin remained, and only blood or mess were on his clothes. His complexion, while pale, would be restored with proper food and sleep. He will live. You hung your head low as the tenseness softened.

Sister Emily said with trembling jubilation, she clasped her hands together.. “For these great benefits of your eternal goodness we give our most humble thanks. Praise the lord and his miracles!” Sister Emily unclasped her hands. “I did know you were a paladin!”

“Sister Emily, we shall discuss this at a later time. We have people to treat.”

She blushed. “A—Ah yes, of course!”

You and Sister Emily tended to each patient until the sun dipped into the horizon. The final patient, a young girl with a slashed leg, laid on her bed. You held yourself back from patting her head, the gauntlet was not fit for such a thing

“Sir Knight, did God send you?”

You paused, no humble servant of God would say such a thing, in your perspective at least. Despite all that had happened to assume such a grand belief was… Difficult.

“It is through God’s grace that I am here, as are the other defenders.”

The young girl nodded, eyes half shut.

“Rest, I will be here tomorrow.”

“Thank you, Sir Knight…”

You forgot the last time where your duty felt so fulfilling. Back in Jerusalem, it was battle after battle, lepers dying constantly, a life of continuous test of faith.

“Blessed Father, who art thou in heaven…”

You stood on the grounds of the church now reduced rubbles. First, you pulled the cross out of t the rubble and placed the cross on the unbroken pulpit. You went down on your knees and clasped your hands together.

“I thank thee for using me to be the vessel of your miracle and for healing the innocents. I give our most humble gratitude, Lord. I pledge to defeat the dark lord and help the helpless. In your name, I will spread your grace and justice. Amen.”

The white light bloomed inside your chest. A warmth spread from your heart and throughout your body.

“My lord?”

“Rainier.” The cross spoke. “I have seen the oppression of my people by the darkness. Those given my blessing have been astray of their duties. So I have chosen you to deliver my world from evil.”

"What of Jerusalem, my people?"

“They will be as they are.”

Like many faithful, true faithful that is, you remembered two verses of the Holy Bible.

Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

And finally…

John 4:6

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God…

If this were in the bible, surely, The Lord will forgive your transgressions…

“Did Jesus Christ come in the flesh of God?”

“He has, for he is that I am.”

The light flowed like a soft river stream. Fatigue and worries disappeared, like the dust swept by a strong yet gentle wind.

“Through me, you shall do wonders. Save my children and defeat the darkness born from man. Go to Eckron, and slay the demon Beelzebub.”

“I will, I will not fail you.”

The light disappeared. The world slowly returned. The moon shone, you now had a mission. At a nearby lake, you took off your helmet and unwrapped the cloth. The clear lake water reflected your unmarred face. You took off your gauntlet to see a clean hand. You truly spoke with God and he gave you a mission.

Go to Eckron and slay Beelzebub…

You looked for Sister Emily, she must know more.

“Sister Emily?”

Inside the makeshift hospital, the small room where Sister Emily stayed still had a lit candle. Inside, she sat at her table writing something on a parchment. She looked up with her sunken eyes.

“Ah…” She rubbed her eyes. “Sir Knight, how can I help?”

“Call me Rainier, I never had the chance to introduce myself.”

She nodded with a soft but tired smile. “Sir Rainier, is there something you need?”

“I have received a new mission. I am to travel to Eckron and slay Beelzebub."

Her eyes widened. “Ekcron has been abandoned for decades… Plague demons and the undead roam that forsaken city! No one has ever recaptured it!”

“I am still bound by God’s order.”

She cupped her chin. “Then you need supplies… Which can’t be found here.”

Sister Emily retrieved another parchment and scribbled furiously then handed it to you.

“Take this to Mesla, there you can go to a church and hand the letter to Father Gregory, he will help you more than I can. But… Can you stay longer? The adventurers will leave and there won’t be enough men to protect the village. We’ll send a courier for help and we’ll make sure to include so you can get some reward, what say you? “There’s no need to plead, I will wait.”

So began your stay in the village of Johan. Most of the days consisted of assisting the villagers and removing debris, though you kept your armor on in case of another demon attack.

“Milord, here's some water! For you”

“Thank you, child.”

You knelt down and took a small bowl of water from the child. Thankfully, having a small lake near the town helped the village to survive. A small smile formed as you watched the child distribute water to the hard working men.

Under the gentle sun, a small breeze strolled by. You and other able bodied men continued to remove the debris. Many items and precious belongings soon returned to the rightful owner little by little. While many knights would be adverse to such work, your brothers did many labors when tending the hospital. You shouldered a tall wooden beam and hurled to the pile.

“Ah, milord.” The village elder said. “Thank you for helping us as always.”

“Good afternoon, Hall. What news of the traders?”

His hands clasped uneasily. “None yet, ser. We sent Narro, our courier, to the next town to get some help and supplies but he has not returned.”

“Is the road dangerous?”

The village elder shook his head. “No, not even far. It could be that the village might have some problem and they needed help. I’m certain there are no problems.”

The answer did not satisfy, and as much as you wanted to head over to the next village the people needed you. Instead, you…

You gathered information from others, as Sister Emily was busy tending to the sick and cooking with the other women. From what you could gather, the religion bared many similarities. The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit remained, but there was no Jesus Christ, but the Krist The First Hero, who died to save the world when humanity was corrupted by ‘the darkness’ which you guessed to be sin and temptation. Most knew only this much, unfortunately…

“If you want to know more, you should ask Sister Emily… Though I wonder why you need to know, milord.”

To avoid suspicions, your best option was to speak with her. As the sun slowly dipped into the horizon, you knocked on Sister Emily’s door.

“Sister, this is Rainier.”

The door opened with a soft creak. She wore a simple evening gown with a strange cap. The white flowing dress swayed, and her half open eyes stared at you.

“Ah… I’ve disturbed you. Forgive me.”

She shook her head, she let out a long yawn. “No, I always have time for you, Sir Rainier. Is there something you need?”

“I was hoping to ask some questions regarding Krist and Kristos.”

Her head tilted with a confused gaze. “Are you not versed with Kristos? Seeing how you are blessed by God?”

“Yes but…”

“The truth is… I’m not from this world. I was summoned by God to stop the demon army. This might be hard to believe but—”

“Oh, like the heroes summoned two months ago!”

Your head tilted. “Pardon?”

She nodded. “The crown performed a summoning ritual to summon the heroes and they have been fighting the demon army since then!” Sister Emily said excitedly.

“You are… Taking my words without a doubt rather quickly.”

Sister Emily shrugged. “Sir Rainier, while the people do not know, I am versed with miracles performed by clerics. What you did was purifying the poisoned arrow and healing the wound at the same time, that level of proficiency is unheard of. It takes at least fifteen years of devotion to be able to perform a basic healing.”

She seemed calm, too calm for a woman who was told something ridiculous.

“Sister, is there something else you’re hiding from me?”

“None at all, now, you wanted to know more about the majesty that is Krist, let us begin.”

You learned the nuance of Kristos, such as the twelve saints and various differences within the church. Most importantly, you learned that it was the church that summoned the heroes. While there were no radical differences, even t he church in a new world had their own internal struggles and rife with greed.

The next morning, the traders finally arrived without an issue. While you did not get any money, the people in the village saved enough for you to have an adventuring pack, filled with essential goods for traveling and Narro said he sent a letter to the adventurer’s guild to include your contribution to the village’s defense.

“Thank you for protecting the village, Sir Rainier.” The village elder said. “Truly… You have been a blessing in this dark times.”

“And thank you for the supplies. God bless you.”

The old man smiled. “And God bless you. Safe travels, Sir Rainier.”

After a farewell, you traveled with the trader who happened to be on their way to Mesla as well except that they would take a longer route. With a map in hand and with a road with plenty of signs, going to Mesla would be easy on your own as well. You…

You joined the traders.

Unlike Jerusalem, the crisp air of the forest made for easy traveling. The soft dirt road made for easier traveling. The carriage’s wheel rolled along as you walked beside with your hand on the hilt of your sword. The wind rolled by, you pulled the straps of the pack and continued your walk.

“Sir Rainier, so I hear you are a knight errant?”

The trader, Homan, said from the driving seat of the carriage. Along with him, two more carriages followed. The other caravan guards seemed polite, perhaps a bit cold, but you were not here to make friends either. Homan was a portly man with a mustache, dressed in a rugged traveling coat with many pockets.

“That I am. I am on a personal mission.”

“Ah, that sounds like a great story for children should you succeed. A tale of an honorable knight on his quest for justice.” Homan laughed. “Regardless of your goals, it is good to have more numbers, these roads are safe but you never know.”

“What kind of dangers?”

“Wolves, bandits, maybe even some creatures like ogres or goblins, but they should be deeper into the forests. Dumb as they are, they learned not to pick a fight with caravans.”

“I pray all of us will be safe.”

The caravans stopped for the night. Underneath the black sky, the stars shone like scattered gems. After a moderate meal of a mildly flavored soup, you and other caravan guards.

“Wait…”

You saw a faint light walking along the same way as. The figures grew larger as they approached closer. Your eyes softened. The line of people wore tattered clothes and carried a gaunt, grim expressions. You’ve seen them plenty of times, they were refugees. One of them fell, you quickly rushed over.

“Sir Rainier!” A guard called.

You ignored their shout and knelt beside the refugee, a man with a baby swaddled to his back. His breath was shallow, he was facing death soon. You put your hand over the man.

“Lord, I come to you as your humble servant, take him back from the brink of death and for this child. I beseech you, o Lord of all that is right…”

Your hands glowed once more. The fallen father’s eyes slowly opened back up. The other refugees knelt, hands clasped together in prayers.

“Are you alright?”

“Thank you, milord… Thank you!”

You took the man’s hand and helped him stand.

“Are you all heading to Mesla?”

“Y—Yes, we are hoping the church will take us in…”

Sorry for the short update folks, today's been a hard day.

You decided to speak with Homan, maybe they can travel with the caravan… But you were certain there would be a price. Inside the carriage, you sat across Homan, who twiddled his moustache.

“Sir Rainier, you must understand I am a trader, I cannot simply help without some form of return.”

“I am aware, is there something I can do to.”

“There is, actually.” Homan rubbed his chin. “Are you associated with the church?”

“No.”

Technically, you weren’t. The church of this world was foreign to you. The church in Jerusalem… Was also foreign to you. The inner politics and the schemes they played, you always stayed away from it. Your hands on your knees tensed up.

“To a trader, information is priceless. You, Sir Rainier, who can perform miracles outside of the church is unheard of.”

Your eyes narrowed. “You want to sell this information, which will put me in danger.”

“Please, Sir Rainier, I am not someone so greedy that I will sell to the highest bidder. However, there will be significant attention to you should you agree.”

“So be it, as long as it is not someone with ill intent.”

Homan clasped his hands together and nodded, you didn’t like that motion, that look of a merchant that some had in Jerusalem… For now, you only had his words, but the safety of refugees mattered more. You walked out of the carriage and continued guarding.

“Milord…”

More refugees approached, dressed in tattered rags and staring with sunken eyes.

“We beg of you, heal us as well…”

You knelt beside the old man. Refugee after refugee, you healed each poor soul to help them walk. Homan offered gruel and food he could spare, though there was not much to go around the refugee would live. You scooped up a ladle and poured the soup into the bowl of the next refugee. Seeing their faces so relieved was far better than fighting in some battlefield, you prayed the next battle would be far.

Two weeks later, you, the refugees, and the caravan was about three days away from Mesla. As usual, you walked beside Homan’s carriage. The sky darkened early in the afternoon. The clouds gathered but no rain had yet to fall.

“Are they that stubborn?”

Homan nodded. “Like a stone crab’s shell, they will bleed you dry to get just a bit more profit. But the gnomes are who you seek for high quality fey items. Damn money grubbing stools…”

“They reminded me of people I know back home…” You said with a sigh. “Greed is a dangerous sin.”

“But not dangerous as a woman, let me tell you, the fey women are something else!” Homan chuckled. “Makes the process much easier.”

>“Are they that beautiful?”
>“What kind of items do gnomes make?”

The next town came into view, a scent of wet wood and faint ash permeated in the air.

“Homan, stop.” You commanded. “There’s a body.”

You quickly ran to the body full of arrows on the woman’s back. You saw the village in the same state as the village you helped, devastated but with fresh signs of a raid. You walked back to Homan.

“What kind of items do gnomes make?”

Homan pulled a necklace out. “Just about everything, but they are known for their charms and traversal tools of the fey wilds.”

“What’s that charm for?”

“Luck.” Homan grinned. “A merchant’s most important skill.”

“I didn’t know luck can be mastered.”

Homan placed his charm back. “No, but you can increase your odds with items like mine. A merchant can be rich as a king but then become a beggar in a matter of days. It is curious, most men ask how beautiful the fey are.”
You let out a quiet chuckle. “I am but a soldier of God, my duty matters more. No woman will stop me from fulfilling it.”

The next town came into view, a scent of wet wood and faint ash permeated in the air. Crows flew over, cawing. You did not have to look further to see the caved in roofs and bodies strewn like trash. The smell of death spread toward you.

“Homan, stop.” You commanded. “There’s a body.”

You quickly ran to the body full of arrows on the woman’s back. You saw the village in the same state as the village you helped, devastated but with fresh signs of a raid. You walked back to Homan, who clutched his necklace. The guards drew their sword and the refugees stayed further at the back.

“I and other guards can scout ahead.”

“Understood.”

You led from the front and the guards followed behind. Men, women, children, the corpses laid on the dirt like dogs. Your rage, cold as the harshest winter, raged quietly. Your grip on your sword tightened.

“Damn demons…” A guard growled.

The crow’s cries echoed.

“This place seems clear, should we—”

Screams echoed back where you came. You and the guards quickly ran back. Demons in spiky black armor swung their crudely shaped swords and axes. Carriages sped past you deep into the village and the refugees ran.

“We don’t get paid to protect the refugees!” A guard said.

“I’m not dying here!” Another guard said

You prayed for an advantage in this battle.

“Lord, please give me the strength and power to persevere…”

You ran toward the demons, and saw several refugees being cut down. You clench your sword and shield.

“Through me, I am your tool against evil!”

White light surrounded your sword. A sound of strong wind passing through a forest echoed. The demons stopped and all their eyes turned on you, including those who were on the verge of death. Archers, spearmen, and marauders, they all now sprinted to you, even ignoring the guards. The demons roared, as did you.

“For God and His glory!”

A two handed club slammed into your shield, you buckled your knees, push forward, and thrust the sword inside the demon. You turn around and as you pull the sword out swing your hips to slash through the demon’s plate armor, you then quickly raised your shield to block the third demon’s slash.

“Rrragh!” You let out a roar.

Black blood spilt across the dirt, no matter how many times your blade cut down the enemy and your shield blocked an attack, the horde of demons did not end. Time no longer registered in your mind. Something cold plunged into your shoulder. An intense pain throbbed, your visions darkened. Strength slowly left you, and your grip trembled. The demons stopped and slowly walked backwards, suddenly on the defensive.

You stood where you were, you didn't have to kill them all, just needed to make more time for the refugees and the caravans to flee. If you died here, so be it, God will choose another worthy servant. The grip on your sword and shield shook, fatigue pulled your body down like shackles, and sweat stung your eyes.

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

A long exhale escaped from your lips.

“Have at thee, hellspawn!”

The demons roared. The black wave crashed into you. A spear from the side pierced through your plate armor and chainmail. At the same time, a giant mace struck your shield, sending you on the floor. You stand back up.

“Back to hell, hellspawn!”

Your breath shuddered. For that brave sentence. Your knees buckle. The demons ran forth, but light beams pierced through the demons. Within seconds, they all fell.

“You heard that? So gallant.”

Your visions darkened. The tension and fatigue that built up crashed into you, making you fall to your knees. Voices spoke but you could not see them.

“He has the scent of the old god.” One girl said. “Eugh.”

“But he has a pure heart.” Another voice said. “Humans are so amusing, aren’t they?”

“A flame so wild, but quick to dim,” The third voice said. “But this flame has a greater purpose. Let us take him.”

Your eyes closed, and your mind wandered in the darkness.

Your eyes opened. A quaint scent of spice and dirt soothed your mind, and your body was above a soft cushion. This… Where was this place?

You saw a small human with wings for arms, no bigger than your finger holding a berry in her arms like a large fruit. Her fangs sank deep into the flesh and tore the soft body like a beast. You rubbed your eyes, and the small human still existed. You took a step closer, and the small human finally looked up at you.

“Hey you, you’re finally awake.”

“Yes… I am.” You said, still unsure what to do. “Where am I?”

“You’re in my friend’s cabin.”

“And that is in?”

She rolled her black eyes and red pupils, devoid of any white. “You’re in Cridhe Kall, the fey realm. Klem and Mekl found you on the verge of death and saved you.”

The last moment suddenly flashed back, yes, you were facing those demons to ensure the caravans and the refugees were safe.

“What happened to them? Are they safe?”

The small woman shrugged. “I dunno, probably. I’m here to watch over the house before they come back.”

You looked around the home. Orbs of light floated around the room. The wooden floor’s warmth heated your foot pleasantly, and the general warmth of the home hugged you. Comfort, you forgot the last time you could relax.

“Where are my weapons and armor?”

“I think Klem and Mekl stored it. Can’t have someone foreign have weapons, saving a human is already a risk.”

“Then why rescue me?”

Muir took another bite and swallowed. “Ask them, like I said, I’m just here to watch over the house. If you're bored, you can go outside, just don't go too far.”

“I see, then I’ll head out for a bit.”

Muir shrugged. “Have fun, human.”

You turned the brass knob and stepped outside. The scent of forest hit you, but with an odd sweetness. The lights glittered like stars in the deeper parts of the forest. Orbs of light floated, and the sound of giggles echoed. Tall trees, tallest and thickest you’ve ever seen, were carved into a home and had wooden bridges that connected to other trees.

“That’s the human.”

“He looks different.”

“The old god’s smell… Iron and fire.”

Beings like Muir flew, and women with pointy ears whispered. Some were part trees with thick leaves instead of hair. You rubbed your eyes, but they remained the same. Men with lower half of a horse and with stone limbs.

“Should someone talk to him?”

“Where’s Zanzi?”

You took another step forward, and the strange folks took a step back.

"Greetings, I am not here to harm you."

A burst of not so loud whispers followed. They fluttered, jumped back, and some took a curious step forward. You stood where you were, unsure what or who to talk to, like some dog too scared to do anything. What you needed were your sword and shield. Thankfully, they were more curious than intent on killing you.

“He can talk!”

“Our tongue, but not our kind… Someone has to talk to him. Where’s Klem and Mekl? They found it, they should deal with it!”

“Here.”

Two folks with pointed ears arrived, appearing identical as if the reflection walked out of the mirror. Both were pale skinned with long flowing blond hair, and their green eyes gazed at you like a mad scholar would. You were not a person, but a thing to be studied.

“Look, Mekl. He’s all better now.”

“Klem, it’s a human, that’s not particularly a good thing.”

“But he did stand alone to defend the innocent.”

Mekl, the one on the left, giggled, and God protect you, her voice was lovely.

“My ladies, I thank you for saving my life.” You bowed.

“He knows gratitude.”

“That he does, Klem.” Mekl said. “Even if he is of iron and fire.”

It's polite. Then...
>ask about iron and fire
If these people have some sort of issue with God, that could be a problem. They might be demonic.

“I am Rainier, Order of Saint Lazarus. I am thankful for your hospitality, but I must depart.”

“To where?”

“Eckron, to slay Beelzebub.”

Shouts of fear exploded. Mekl and Klem grabbed your arms with a menacing grin.

“A name like that should not be said so easily, child of iron.” Klem said.

“Indeed, a name is a powerful thing, something that should not be uttered, child of fire.” Mekl said.

You walked backward as they pulled you back inside the house. The released you softly, Mekl went inside a room inside the home while Klem sat on a wooden stump. They wore a white gown with long sleeves, with a weaved flower necklace and crowns. Klem stared at you, fluttering her eye lashes with her lips just parted as if she thought about something to say.

“You’re not human are you?” Klem said.

“I am a human.”

“Your flow of mana seems different… Otherworldly.”

You avoided her gaze. “Are all of your kind able to perceive this?”

“If they look hard enough, they can, but yours is too strange to be one.”

“Well I—”

“Found it! I hope you don’t mind but your weapons and armor were in poor condition, I had them fixed.”

Mekl placed your armor and weapons on the long wooden table, along with your pack. Your armor shined, and your sword gleamed with a new coat of polish.

“Thank you, truly, I’m grateful.” You bowed.

“There’s something about your mana flow, you’re not a normal human but someone destined for greatness.” Mekl said.

“I’m but a servant of god, my lady. That is all I am and what I pray to be.”

Klem stretched with a troubling moan. “Well, it’s time you get on to your way, where to?”

“You can send me where I want?”

“It’s a simple matter.”

1.
>“Why did you help me?”
>“What’s wrong with my mana flow? Is it like an unbalanced humor?”

2.
>“To the outskirt of Eckron then.”
>“To Mesla please.”

Fellow Sister Emily's advice. She knows this place, and our adversary's capabilities, better than we do.

“Why did you help me?”

Mekl tilted her head. “Why? He said, so curious. Don’t you think so Klem?” Mekl said.

“So curious, not like a human.” Klem said. “He even thanked us.”

“That he did. Well, I’ll tell you, Rainier.”

Mekl came face to face, eyes close and noses on the verge of kissing. Her green eyes lit up, not by the light but the eye itself. Something stirred within you, not fear, but not comfort either. You stood your ground and willed yourself to stare back. Mekl grinned then spun back.

“The demons are enemies of all that is good, I will not discriminate against those who will rise to be a hero. Not everyone can be a hero, but a hero can come from anyone.”

“Then send me to Mesla, please.”

“Sister?” Mekl said.

Klem nodded.

The two sisters held hands and outstretched their free hand. A green circle appeared below your feet.

“Iron and fire, sword and shield, cut and pierce the black plagues of Beelzebub. Ride our wind swiftly. Bring forth the cleansing light with iron and fire.”

Green light grew stronger in a brilliant glimmer. Mekl and Klem flanked on your sides, their soft lips kissed your cheeks.

>“Here is an ivy, so that fidelity and love can remain ever pure.”
>“Here is a holly, to be vibrant and vicious in the wake of cold darkness.”
>“Here is a yew, to keep you bright and pure in the maws of blackness.”

“Farewell, God’s child. Farewell" Mekl said softly.

“March on, God’s child. March on.” Klem said.

The light engulfed your vision.

“W—What is this?”

You opened your eyes, this seemed to be a convent. The women wore the clothes that Sister Emily did so this must be Mesla. A Father stood in front of the sister, while not alarmed he didn’t seem welcoming either.

“Father Gregory?”

“You know me?”

You pulled out the letter from your pack.

“Sister Emily sent me. I am Rainier.”

Father Gregory approached cautiously, he stretched his arm and grabbed your enveloped with the tip of his fingers. He adjusted his circular glasses then read the letter.

“My God… We all thought you were dead!”

“The people of fey saved me.”

His eyes bulged. “The fey? Good God, you are not lying.”

“Is it rare to gain their assistance?”

Father Gregory’s mouth dropped like a gate. “Rare? Good man, the fey are illusive creatures who has not intervened since the Second Blacktide.”

You harrumphed, not wanting to further offend or confuse Fatehr Gregory. “Sister Emily told me you can help me in my mission.”

“Yes… You mission in Mesla. To my office, please.”

Much like the priests in Jerusalem, Father Gregory’s office was lavish. Carpets, bookshelves, a table made of polished wood, and glass windows, bloated elegance oozed like a popped puss. Yet, Father Gregory did not appear as a greedy man. Father Gregory parted the rolled up map on the table .

“Mesla will take a week to travel by horse. Several scouts are missing and one has been driven to madness.” Father Gregory said grimly. “If what Sister Emily said is true, you may be our only hope, unlike… No, forget what I said. This map is yours to keep.”

“What did the scout say?”

Father Gregory shook his head regretfully. “God rest his soul, all he does is mutter about some apocalypse, he might as well be right… This church is your home, Sir Rainier, as is anyone who is a soldier of Kristos.”

“Has a trader by the name of Homan come to Mesla?”

Father Gregory rubbed his chin in ponderance then shook his head. “I’m afraid not. If you do want to find out, I suggest you head to the Merchant Guild. Though there were a group of adventurers asking by your name as well.”

“I see, thank you, Father.”

“I’ll have something prepared for your journey so you can leave tomorrow. Though it is for one day, spend some time here, Mesla is a delightful place.”
