Ide only have to serve 24 months which included 6-8 months of training, 12 months your od duty and the rest state side doing fuck all on a base. When I got to Nam I would have volunteered fr the LRRPs. That way I'de only have t spend 5 days a month in the field and my whole job was to AVOID the enemy and report back intel. You also got training from the Special Forces and the best equipment so your chances of surviving were much higher. And alot of your time in country was spent doing specialist courses like Recondo, Ranger school and other such things. Unlike grunts who spent 4 weeks at a time walking through the jungle with 50kgs of gear on them, just waiting to get ambushed because that was the strategy.

He volunteered to become a radioman thinking he'd be a on a submarine or a carrier far from the bullets. 2 years later he was a UDT in Vietnam. He ended up becoming a SEAL. Did 8 years, 3 tours and left as a CPO lol.
