I don't think that is true. It is kind of the same mechanism I have now that I am 35 and a virgin. I learned about how women work and I will never get a relationship even if a woman came after me. But in the past I was oblivious to how they work and I was desperate to get a girlfriend. In the same way women didn't have the illusion of choice they have now and they were probably happier with the guys they could actually get together with. Their hypergamy itch was much easier to scratch when they didn't have the delusion that the anonymous chad from other side of town would marry them up if they fuck. Both sides were deluded but overall happier.
