A couple of days ago, I was doing some volunteer work, and during a break, I managed to muster the courage to sit and talk with some girls who were chit-chatting. They were a few years younger than me (I'm 30 and they were around 27). They actually laughed at my jokes and made an effort to include me in the conversation. One of them even said to another, "Tell Anon that funny thing that happened to you." We spent maybe an hour talking and sharing laughs.That was a real booster. Maybe I'm not as hideous and pathetic as my low self-esteem subconscious tells me.
