They've become sort of a symbol of the far left more than anything. They make up so little of the population that one can infer advocacy for them is not out of policy concerns but rather that support for them is of an ideological bent. Without getting hyperbolic transgenderism is a means to enforce authoritarian morals upon people who just want to be left alone. It's not enough to just let Transgender people be - if you're not validating their pronouns and their entire identity in general you're oppressing them. Anyone who believes in Negative Freedoms shudders at the issue because it seems so stupid on the surface but actually boils down to arguing about objective truth when you dig deep enough.
