I think transgenderism will be looked back on as a primarily gen z phenomena (reminder to the oldfags that some of us are reaching 30 now) and gen alpha is gonna look down on our generation as weird like we do millennials. I'm all for gender expression so I'm mostly talking about HRT cycles and surgeries, I think they're gonna be phased out of the zeitgeist when trans people start aging and more extensive studies are done. This is already happening in Scandinavian countries to a degree

I think transgenderism will be looked back on as another right-wing boogeyman, something that was a rather insignificant and benign part of society but that right-wingers constantly talked about and demonized in order to rally populist moral-panicky voters. Said another way, history will remember how society treated transgenderism rather than transgenderism itself, because the former phenomenon has been much more broadly important. In that sense it doesn't matter much whether transgenderism is a trend or not.

Trans people have existed for as long as time (at least since 1200BC). I think it'll be more similar to other mental challenges where you learn you have it then you can treat it (transition)
