Traveling how most people do it fucking sucks. I don't get how people can enjoy spending so much on travel just to stay some place for a week, rapidly check out all the tourist sites, and then go back to your wage cage down $10k+.I prefer slow travel. Spent 2 years in Kyoto, 6 months in Bangkok, and currently doing 3 months in Kuala Lumpur. It's enjoyable when you actually immerse yourself in the day-to-day life in a new city, one that may be completely different from what you've already experienced. Just getting to walk around in a new city with no particular destination, try out all the new foods while discovering new favorites, and then blending these things in with your typical life. I'm still mostly an introvert who stays indoors most of the time, but it helps break my routine and gives me new experiences without having to break the bank or get too far out of my comfort zone.I actually found that some of my worst days have been the days I decide to actually hit the tourist spots. I went to Wat Arun a couple months back in Bangkok and it was fucking awful. The place is packed with people and everywhere you step you get someone yelling at you to get out of the way because they're taking a picture. And if you don't move you get told to move anyway. I legit enjoyed walking through the modern malls more than going there, because I could actually just live my life in peace while doing so. Kinkakuji in Kyoto was almost as bad too. At this point, I don't even want to go to tourist sites anymore, I don't need to go and take my own pics when there's plenty online already. But people will think something is wrong with me if I spend all that time in a city and skip over them.
