How do you work up the courage to kill yourself? How can you fully realize the desire to end your own life?

And beforehand you set things up in a more calculated way to enable that impulse to succeed by getting the elements of your chosen method in place and removing barriers that would prevent it. At least I think that's how it happens. I've never had a genuine suicidal attempt, but I have gotten myself close to it a couple of times. And I have experience with self-harm, which felt similar in a way, just less destructive.
