It was not the first but it definitely popularized the VRMMO literary genre. I remember watching it as it aired and it was absolutely huge. The idea of people being stuck in a mmorpg was a novel idea and seemed really unique to me back then. Looking back it was honestly pretty underwhelming and after the first season it went to shit quickly. I'd recommend just reading The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor or Infinite Dendrogram.
