why were the 90s and 2000s a golden age for sci fi and cyberpunk, and why is it basically dead today? there's barely anymore (actual) cyberpunk being made. some things that approximate cyberpunk sure, but aren't, nor do they claim to be.sci-fi not as much, but definitely less sci-fi classics coming out than there were then.
>>82895526postmodernism
>>82895526If we had the money we could make the world how we wanted it. Billionaires are wasting their money man
>>82895538isnt postmodernism just a fancy term for nihilism?
>>82895526because unironically, life is not dystopian anymore nor is there any real place where punk culture belongs anymore. if you talk to modern punks and nerds, they claim that punk and nerd culture is about promoting communism and anti-racism and anti-sexism. the only people left to complain about where the world is heading are far-left extremists, not cool drug addicts who have creative talent.
>>82895526>there's barely anymore (actual) cyberpunk being made.dude go to Ukraine. On the war front there are 9000% proof cyberpunk made every minute.
>>82895836it's a fancy word for antifoundationalism (in politics), but more specifically i mean the novelty of information society gave birth to all this stuff. not sure why OP didn't include the 80s though
>>82895526because cyberpunk culture, or culture in general, still appealed to human sensibilities back then. what you are witnessing is the death of the *human*. culture doesnt exist in the same way today as it did back then, today, media is essentially just capital flows masquerading as culture. it is soulless because soul and artistic expression is not the format anymore
>>82895884culture isn't made for humans anymore. it's a grotesque, undulating array of meaningless drivel and self referencing simulacrum. media with no purpose in a world with no purpose
>>82895884>>82895958>marxism>postmodernism
>>82895526Because we still had the idealist idea of the future and the sensationalism of dystopia becomes less entertaining as you see it built around you. We won't get the cool eat-noodles-in-the-rain futurism neo-tokyo dystopia. We'll get the one where everything you do is either illegal or bad for your soul (in which it won't be illegal), with Boston Dynamics robots armed with machine guns keeping us away from data centers. The tech industry will start siphoning up all the electricity in cities while we pay for it (it'll just be taken from the grid and since it's a governmental project they'll just pass the cost to the citizens on the grid instead). We will see futile attempts at 'green energy' come about in the form of even more windfarms and stupid feel-good projects instead of just investing in nuclear. Before long the landscape will die off, grass will not grow, and water will turn sour due to pollution like it already is in the 3rd world. Only instead of civilizational failure causing it, it will be tech industrialization and corporate greed doing it instead. Robots won't be used to make mail-order robo-waifus, they'll first be made into securitrons and armed heavily. Maybe eventually we will get robo-waifus, but they will listen to everything you say, see everything you do, and relay everything you say or do with/to them to the data center so they can pre-program themselves to act specifically in the best way to guide you to whatever thing the tech center wants you to. Tech wants you to buy their laptop? Maybe waifu recommends it and is able to be a walking ad. Maybe waifu hears you like the color blue, maybe products you thought of buying happen to come in your favorite color. Maybe you'll see an ad for something and it makes you want your favorite food, but waifu/tech is way ahead of you. She already bought the stuff and has it on the stove, why do you think you saw the ad earlier? Dream to some, nightmare to others
>>82896307They could at least give us high rises and neon signs
>>82895845i wanted to dispute this, but you're right. most people have just become complacent excluding extremists.
>>82896874high rises and neon signs would be nice
