theyre hosted in kazakhstan, all blizz could do is get isps to blacklist connections to their servers and then youd just have to use a vpn. but thats kinda unlikely anyway because of the way blacklisting ips works...basically all theyd have to do is get another ip address for their servers which would take like a minute and then blizzard would have to go through a whole annoying process to get the new one blacklisted too.

the real reason blizz is suing is that you sort of HAVE to just in order to defend your ip...basically if blizz was proven to know about private servers and do nothing, then they could lose their own rights to wow in court. that is, it would be recognized as "effectively public domain" or "abandoned." this has happened with things before, like in theory if newspapers use the word google without paying google they could in theory be sued for copyright infringement. however because so many people use "google" as a verb, its basically recognized by courts that its become part of common language and so Google cant sue people for saying they googled something. they did try for a little while in like '05-'10 and just to be safe some newspapers started saying FWSEing for "Famous Web Search Engine-ing" but Google's google lawsuits got thrown out eventually and they gave up and people went back to saying i googled it.

there have been some funny things related to this, like there was this company that owned the movie rights to lord of the rings for years since like the 60s or 70s and never did anything with them. someone tried to take the rights from them by arguing that they were "abandoned" and not being used, and so the company with the rights basically made an incredibly shoddy series of animated lord of the rings movies at absolutely minimum budget in order to "use" the rights and deny the use of that argument by people who actually wanted to make high effort movies. idk what happened eventually so that the big budget peter jackson LOTR movies got made, presumably they sold the rights in the end of who knows.

but so because of this kind of thing there exists this fucking terrible series of animated lotr movies from like the 70s. the company that made them basically tried to release as few copies as possible, it wasnt in any theaters at that time and dvds didnt exist so the only way to see it was to buy the movies on old timey film strip rolls from the company and put it on a movie theater type projector yourself.

it wasnt a romhack, those are actually way harder to make because you have to work with the really old way that video games used to be coded, it was much lower-level code aka not "for [pokemon] in [party][ draw Ball.object" type stuff the way most code works now but rather atuff thats like

in fact when you code things in higher level languages like python or java, it actually gets translated down into this lower level language by the "compiler" and the computer stuff internally actually still uses that lower level language. back when computers were worse, this "compiling" could take days, so in older things relating to programming like dilbert, youll see references to "finally time to kick back while it compiles for ten hours" and stuff like that.

but anyway the game my friend codeveloped was a full ground-up rewrite, which is actually way the fuck easier to do than a romhack (one that has story or map editing or new features anyway) even though it sounds harder. since pokemon isnt that complicated, you can basically have chatgpt write a python version of pokemon in literal minutes...at least as far as the "engine" anyway, like having battles/menus/walking around etc, and then the actual work would be going and adding folders holding the pokemon names, stats, & images, map images, npc images, move animations, etc...thats the difference between a fangame and a romhack basically, theyre very different things. iver already got the basic engine for my fangame working, im making it sidescrolling with real time battles. (the newest poke games are real time in 3d during battles, but i thought of this years ago, and its still different because its still separate from walking around in real pokemon.)

oh but the cool thing about romhacks compared to fangames is that you can play romhacks on the old systems, like you can load romhacks onto a "flash cart" which is a modded gba or ds cartridge with a slot for an SD card so you can load games. because sd cards are so big now you can quite easily make a gba one with every game that exists by the way lol. but anyway you can load romhacks onto those and play them on a real game boy advance which is neat. with fangames on the other hand theyre only playable on the computer. (or you could make a phone app fangame if you wanted. not for iphone cause they dont let you install 3rd party apps but you could with android.)

an older kid who was a family friend told me where to get a DS flashcart when my family was visiting china and so my dad and me went to this like back alley vidya store to get one but the guy pretending he didnt know what we were talking about. so my friend (whos from there) went by himself and got one for me lol. (well actually im from there also but dont look like i am kek. same sitch as dicker the kicker.)

that was about 2007ish, but when that one died in around 2013 i googled online and they were available a ton of places shipped from china for like 20 bucks. not sure if theyre still that easy to get, they were just on aliexpress for a while but maybe nintendo shut that down.

pretty much everyone including the fire dept is fucking done with the situation here, the police basically dont enforce parking or traffic laws or illegal dumping laws and so the fire department has started driving trucks around all day so THEY can make people move cars out of illegal spots and make the sanitation department clean up piles of garbage for being fire hazards and obstructing fire dept access to buildings. the fire dept is typically not happy when they have to do other peoples jobs in addition to their own.

funnily one of the first things the police said when i called them about an insane amount of dog crap on a particular street was that hazardous waste was the fire depts problem. i was like you want me to call the fire dept about dog crap? uhh officer with all due respect would you mind doing that for me? he was like uhh no and i was like im thinking thats because you think theyll be upset. ok, if you want me to call them, can i get that in writing for when i tell them the police say dog crap is their job -- in case i lose the recording im making of us talking right now? he got pissed off and hung up but the next day the dog crap was gone after being there for weeks. lmao

Sorry if those are scary. I like to take photos of dead animals because with an old camera lacking zoom living animals are very hard. They move a lot and you can't get very close. But you can get really detailed and clear photos of dead animals...I'm just like Audubon! Well, how detailed you can get them depends on how close you're willing to get. I'll get very close to a bird or something natural seeming, but the above creature lying dead in the middle of a city park I didn't want to get too too close to.

But anyway, you don't find dead animals very often, especially not large ones like the above. Well, you see roadkill a lot, but that's gore and I'm not *that* edgy.

Today was so sunny outside, which is unusual for this time of year, I had to go for a long walk in the nature. I still somehow managed to get cold when getting home. You don't have to invest in anything. Old film cameras are a dime a dozen more or less. Most thrift stores don't even bother putting them out because no one buys them, but on ebay there are tons. You can check on the "vibe" of a given camera by googling for photos taken with it. Film is like $5-$6 a roll and they still carry basic 400 ISO film at Walmart, or you can get different kinds online if you like. Development is a little harder these days -- but if you're outside a big city and there isn't a random hobby camera store near you, you can send the completed canisters off in the mail to a place that will send you back digital scans or mail you back the negatives if you want to get a scanner yourself. (A bit cheaper that way, I scan my own personally.). This will cost like ten bucks per roll for getting scans sent to your email, or five to six for just getting the negatives mailed back.

This all sounds like a lot perhaps, when digital cameras exist, but if we're talking like $10 to $50 dollars for the camera itself -- and $50 will get you some really really nice looking old ones that old folks will comment on often cause they were very pricery back in their day -- you can basically discount that, so it's just $15 for getting 36 photos, or less than 50 cents a photo for hi-res scans plus a physical copy in the form of negatives. Having negatives is actually really good for enlarging photos later -- if you want to make say a poster size print of a really nice one, enlarging a digital photo will involve upscaling and therefore blurriness, whereas poster print shops can take a super hi res scan of the original photo negative and make a poster with perfect resolution from that.

Film doesn't have "pixels" the way digital files do, it's analog, so while there's "graininess" with less expensive film, like there's static on old records, it's still higher fidelity by orders of magnitude -- it's basically like how audiophiles still prefer records. (Though a lot of like Taylor Swift records for example are of albums that were recorded digitally in the first place...in which case it's basically recording the CD onto the record, so it's not any different at all really. But with old timey recording, which a few studios still do, the instruments etc are recorded analog and the record is cut from that, and that IS different.)

The "pixel size" is the size of the crystals formed by the chemicals on the film, basically on the order of tens to hundreds of molecules. So if you have a high enough resolution scanner, you can basically zoom in infinitely far. You would need basically an electron microscope in order to see the pixels on high grade film. In other words the DPI is in the millions or billions. Now the scans that you receive or make yourself will be digital files -- essentially a digital photo of the film itself. But you could enlarge a photo taken on high quality film up to the size of a skyscraper (or to the moon actually) and there still wouldn't be pixelation or blurriness ("jpegging.")

A good number of magazine and fashion photoshoots still use film for that reason actually -- usually "120" film which is a bit different from your common 35mm film but the principle is the same. They use film so that if they end up making like a Times Square billboard that's fifty feet tall from one of the photos it won't be blurry from upscaling.

And if you compare 50 cents per film photo against purchasing a $1000-2000 digital camera, you actually would have to take two or four thousand photos before you're saving money with the digital. And that's just for one digital camera...since film cameras are so cheap you can buy a ton of different cool looking ones or small ones for portability, and also you don't have to worry about dropping them etc since they're so cheap. So you can feel comfortable trying to get tricky shots without worrying you'll break your expensive camera or drop it in a lake etc.

It's a little intimidating at first but pretty easy to get the hang of, and anyone at a camera store can show you the basics of how to load film etc, or I suppose you could look on youtube but seeing it done hands on is way different from watching a video. (Youtube is useful for seeing the specifics of how different cameras operate though, aka which button opens the film door, where the different settings buttons are, etc.) Any old person working at a library will also probably help you if you ask lol.

Darn it, I wrote another post about how it's fun to be able to adjust all the settings like ISO, focus, shutter speed etc to be able to get exactly what you want, but I lost it. All I'll retype about that is that adjusting focus manually is fun. One neat thing you can do is pretend to take a photo of a distant building but set your focus close and catch bystanders in the bottom of the frame or the side in perfect focus without them realizing it's actually them you're focused on. That way you get a really crisp photo of a person who thinks you're looking at a building in the distance, so they look really natural and authentic rather than posing or looking self conscious because a camera is pointed at them.

But anyway, if you're just starting, a "focus free" flash camera like the PS123 in picrel is good to start with -- it's similar to a sturdier and reusable instant camera, with the added feature that it automatically advances the film after each shot instead of requiring winding to advance the film. The PS123 is really fun because it looks like a 90s printer type thing, & it's really easy to load the film because you just pull it out of the canister a little and stick it into the receiving end and then when you close the camera it grabs the film and gets itself ready to start. With even older ones like from the 50s you have to manually get the starting end of the film wound around the receiving thing which can be a little tricky and it sometimes slips off without you realizing if the camera is rickety, leaving you shooting nothing until you realize you shouldve run out of film already and check on it.

Anyway, the PS123 is fun, all you have to do is flick the flash button on if it's darker than regular cloudy weather or if you're indoors. Taking film camera flash photos of things in the rain gives you cool stuff basically every time too. The PS123 does take 2x AA batteries but they last long, just don't leave the flash on.
