Gardening for self-sufficiency seems like such a waste of time. If you do it just for fun, that's fine, but the average person doesnt have a yard big enough to grow all the vegetables they need for the entire year. To get the amount of garlic I need, I would probably have to make half my yard a garlic field.
That's why commercial farming exists
You don't need a very big yard for vegetables for the year, the real issue is fats&protein if you want self sufficiency. But people are starting to turn there anywhere because our civilisation is clearly falling so same is happening as with rome- as people can't rely on centralized power anymore, they turn back to land and simpler tech that can be utilized self sufficiently. Basically I saw this joke on youtube> 2010 : learn to code> 2030: learn to hunter gather
I'm pretty sure people back then just grew what was important and bought spices they needed. The modern self sufficiency is a meme, though. They people that can actually do it well are pretty wealthy and that is the true sufficiency. Not their gardening or solar panels.
There is a guy near me that has like 30 goats in a small yard and he just feeds them hay or something and kills one every now and then to eat.

>not making a small garden>supplementing the rest with foraging just like the homesteaders of the past did
