When Europe started migrating to the new world in huge numbers, if you had money you lived in the cities if you were penniless you homesteaded in the hills or the swamps where the land was basically unchecked by the law.

On top of that, after the civil war the reconstruction of the south was really fucked up after Lincoln was assassinated. It didn't rebuild the towns, it didn't give the south any money, it just freed the slaves which then in-turn created a labor surplus driving the value of labor way down in the south.

The reconstruction just made the south even worse and basically sparked a race-war that's still going on.

It's where all the northern British peasants lived after completing their indentured servitude. It's basically the Norf but with feral niggers mixed in. All the rich plantation owners saw the writing on the wall during reconstruction and moved to New England and the Midwest. Agriculture was all the South had and if you couldn't run your cotton and tobacco farms with slaves there was no point in running them at all.
