Last week, I went to the music store and looked at synthesizers. I don't play piano, and I don't own anything serious for that. I don't think that I would ever seriously learn the piano either. I play the guitar. But a synthesizer isn't a piano.
I looked at a couple of Moogs and played with the keys. It seemed like it was what I was expecting, but less. Only one voice. I looked at the prices. Affordable, on a payment plan that could have bought you a house in the 50s. I thought harder. I have a Commodore 64 at home with three voices. Why spend thousands of dollars on something that in principle, I already own?
I left the store and started looking online for hardware and software. A bit stupid, but the hardware is just a piano overlay for the keyboard. Fuck it. I had tried writing my own voice controller before, but BASIC isn't fast enough for me, so buying software instead of learning and deploying 6510 assembly seemed like a quick way to start playing fast.
Some of the software has already arrived, and I feel like I've got what I saw at the music store. Merry Christmas to me.
