The alternative is letting your dog breed freely, it could be as simple as turning away for a few minutes to talk to another owner at the dog park, next thing you know you're expecting a half dozen new arrivals without the capabilities to care for them and they'd possibly end up in bad homes, this is even worse in poverty stricken areas where dogs can and do roam freely.
