What is the point of all this surveillance? Flock cameras track your driving, your phone and computer sell your location data, the timing of your keypresses, takes screenshots and images and uploads it to the cloud for data, ring doorbells and whatnot have facial recognition software and communicate with each other to track people as they move, your router can map the inside of your house and your movements in it.What is all of it for? Big government is watching, sure, but what do they get out of it? Most of it is done by private companies. I struggle to believe that all of this, the systemic push from every level of life for more and more and more surveillance is literally just to make line go up for companies. It feels so banal and... stupid. And then if its not just that, if its for government surveillance - why? The average person probably only commits traffic violations as their only crime in their entire life. What could possibly be the need to surveil every single person doing every single little thing? They don't even act on it the vast majority of the time. Is it just for the fringe case of stopping insurrection groups who could pose a real threat to order? They already have that covered with the FBI doing their best work with honeypots. So I ask again: what the fuck is the point of all this surveillance?? What does it accomplish besides helping stop 10% more criminals compared to traditional methods??
>>83281020Britain is the exampleIt's not about catching burglars or muggersIt's about catching thought criminals
>>83281020Just for the sake of having it. Maybe someone somewhere just looks through them for fun. Hell, I hear even the companies that have them don't really know what to do with them or have the resources or means to go through it all to find anything in particular. >>83281313But I think this is closest to the truth. It's not about catching criminals or keeping kids safe, it's about making sure people don't voice opinions that those in power don't like. China seems to use it most effectively in that regard but the UK is doing their best to catch up to them.
>>83281020In the old days they had networks of informants that they had to pay blackmail and fuck around with. Now you dont need that and it cheaper.
>>83281020data.data is money.knowing what you buy, where you go, who you associate with, your age, sex, sexuality, height, weight, illnesses, what you own etc... are all data that the gatherer can sell to companies.

>>83281929I work in a nursing home and was surprised to learn that many of the residents are on birth control. But none of them were female. I asked what the purpose of this was. Turns out trooning old men make them easier to deal with. Pretty fucked up. Medical anything is an evil field and I regret becoming a nurse.
