Nirvana is a great example of the lookspill.
They shamelessly plagiarized other acts, most notably the pixies, and got much more rich and famous for doing so.
Look at the Pixies: the lead is a guy with a fat lesbian phenotype, and then there's an actual fat lesbian, and a balding hispanic who looks like a pdfile.
Yeah, one of them does look like a Chad, but he's not the lead, and can't carry the rest.
Meanwhile Cobain perfectly captured the waifish, sensitive, boyish man archetype.
If Cobain looked like Black Francis (fat lesbian guy), no one would know who he was, let alone care if he an heroed.

I should add that looks do play a role in classical music >>83283274 too.
Orchestras use blind auditions, but soloists and conductors are marketed heavily based on their looks, like Gautier Capucan, Julia Fisher, and back in the day, von Karajan, who famously only wanted to be photographed from his "good side" (left, I think).

Yeah, but the average fan probably didn't know that.
The long hair helped hide the acne, and his heightfrauding probably went unnoticed even by the diehards given how much harder it was to detect stuff like that back then (e.g., you couldn't google thousands of photos of him with other people, or share notes with thousands of others online, including those who actually met him in person).
