The founding of japan just copy pasted America's constitution, deleted all the parts about God and freedom, and added a few extra clauses like women have extra rights + no military allowed. This was forced upon the Japanese who did not want such a horrible system, but they were seated at a table with a stack of papers in front of them. Opposite them on the table was a beady eyed hook nosed woman wearing a man suit hunched over and caressing a big red button. Like something straight out of a fairy tale, a real life villainous witch. The implied threat was gut your country and bleed for us or we'll incinerate more cities one after the other. People like to play up the nuke as if they were awe inspiring levels of destruction. Fat man and little boy was fucking nothing compared to the firebombing of civilians or poisoning of their food. They were impoverished before the war and America had been bullying and antagonizing the tiny pacific island for decades before pearl harbor. It was nothing more than bullying up until the creation of modern Japan. That's when it pivoted to being about humiliation. America did eventually release the surviving Japanese-Americans held in the death camps on US soil, but that's only because of optics once they realized they were fabricating evidence of a holocaust. They didn't want to cheapen the impact of the planned German atrocity porn by having corollaries at home.

This is where we go back to the point about workplaces : in Japan, a woman at work is somewhat abnormal unless she is either very young (and not yet married) or very old (a widow who needs to make a living still). And seeing how horrid japanese labour culture is, I can't really blame them for seeing marriage as a "get out of the labour force for free" card. But that's very much the idea : marriage means the wife no longer works because kids (lol, lmao) and what have you. You have to work so she doesn't, that's the entire point of marriage. That's what you're expected to do. Hence a lot of loveless marriages that just happen out of conformity and convenience. The man is no longer that one weird eternal bachelor, the woman is no longer at work.
There are a few fields in which a woman working in her 40s or 50s is accepted and it's the ones where you'd work out of convitction or devotion to a cause : the police, health, public service.
