should've been gatekept, once they started allowing people with retard-level IQ to be diagnosed "autistic" (contrary to the traditional definition) it was over. it should be a specific disorder for people with normal IQ who have communication deficits, not just anyone who has communication deficits. this would be a far more informative definition and would've allowed the medical concept to hold the line against the colloquial repurposing of the word OP complains about.
