making the ugly girl think she's prettier than she is lessens the chance that ugly girl reproduces, and therefore lessens the amount of other peoples kids your own kids have to compete with
it also has the knock-on effect of convincing other, more trusting and naive women that looks don't matter at all and it's ok to get fat, which, again, lessens the chances of those women successfully reproducing and creating competition for your own kids
