I feel like people who gatekeep anything that's a subculture, whether it's being goth or being a gamer or being a stoner or being an epic nerd or whatever, are only doing so because they never grew out of the "stop copying me" phase everyone goes through as a kid.

That's not how subcultures work, the new people continually pour in and warp it, eventually it's barely recognizable or at the very least much more surface level than it was originally, even going so far as to ostracize the original members.
