This huge collective effort to keep society functional literally amounts to nothing. When you reproduce, your kids will also be expected to contribute to society, and get exactly nothing in return, just like you. I'd argue there's no end goal to that.
Society is in state of slow decay l. There's no coming back. It will eventually crash, the empire will end, and something new will arise in its place. This is the flow of history. Nothing lasts forever.

So basically we need a catastrophic event to kill people so that the value of an individual worker goes up.
