OP did you ever count calories? i find its much easier to eat right when everything is logged. i also combo with this being frugal and saving money in general. so there are multiple goals overlapping which i think helps. if i waste money on fastfood it kinda sets me back on many fronts. im not fat though, and have never been really fat. but i used to eat like shit and drink 1-2 times a week. i would be fat today if i kept going. but i've been counting calories for 4ish years now without even lifting consistently. i just track
