Something good it does similar to STALKER is how grounded the response is to alien artifacts popping up; it starts off as some daring thing to hunt them down before eventually being corporatized and bogged down by bureaucracy. There are other things the book does well especially in regards to the protagonist, but you should read it yourself. Biggest difference from STALKER is it doesn't take place anywhere Slavic.
