I feel such a deep connection with the Saturn and PS1 for whatever reason, despite playing GameCube as a toddler and the Wii as a kid. I was destined to be one of "those" people but for whatever reason I latched onto these two. The way I talk about life and relate my experiences feel so rooted in the games I played on both. And I don't know why I'm so fascinated with both.

I don't know if it's because of the late nights spent beating NiGHTS, Klonoa, Ape Escape or Parappa.

I don't know if it's because of the hundreds of hours I've spent practicing in Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga and Virtua Cop.

I don't know if it's because they were what I most commonly used on new CRTs I was acquiring during COVID, getting lost in these games in S-Video and RGB for the first time while everything around me fell apart.

I don't know if it's because despite being in a relationship I hated, by the time they went to sleep all that existed in our apartment was me, my Trinitron and my Saturn, and all my problems melted away.

But something in my head made me obsessed with these two, let's face it, toys, enough to where they take up a large part of my brain. So large they appear in my dreams, my subconscious. I'm sorry I know this is extremely retarded I just wanted to blogpost about things I really like. Bully me in the replies.

I just want to say I prefer strange posts like these over the million threads about sex. Not much I can add other than to say I also like old consoles.

I have no idea how I forgot to mention it but Ridge Racer Type 4 changed my life. Before I played it I was a Nintendo shitter who also liked SEGA (just their popular stuff like Sonic, Jet Set Radio, etc.). But after playing this and realizing just how beautiful games can be it opened up another world for me. I almost started crying when I heard Move Me for the first time. Really I just love Namco in general. Even if they fell off some during the 90s and were never as wild and innovative as SEGA were, they were still masters of their craft. Hard to believe we got Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4 and Klonoa in such close proximity to each other.

One more post because I'm getting really up in my feelings. Klonoa was already an important game to me for years at this point, but it reached another level after I got out of the mental hospital. The day I got out I was scared of the future, trying to figure out how I was going to get my life back on track after a failed suicide attempt and being gone from the outside world and all my responsibilities for a full week. So many tears were shed that day and I felt like I was at the bottom of the world. Then I decided for whatever reason that I wanted to play Klonoa, so I 100% it in one sitting while sipping on hot cocoa. For how horrible that day was and for the hell I went through that week, that experience made it all better, even just for a little bit. Fully taking in all the music with good headphones, really noticing the graphical effects used that blew my mind, really appreciating how tight the whole thing was. There's not a single 2D platformer with better level design than it, maybe Ninja Gaiden (same director lol)

It's quite beautiful and moving to read the way you talk about your experiences. These are not merely toys for you, they carry a lot of meaning and help you navigate life through rough times.
We're possibly the same age, or we grew up playing the same consoles.
I grew up as an only child, sometimes spending whole weeks without seeing my absent parents a single time, lonely staying with my grandparents or with any other family member who wanted to take me.
But I had Donkey Kong in my GBA, and he kept me company all those lonely days.

I played the PS1 as a child of the 90s. The PS2 completely replaces so I don't understand nostalgic feelings toward iy. Same with those who love the Gamecube; the Wii replaces it with perfect backwards compatibility. I could understand if the software menu had any charm, but the PS1 is extremely barebones. That was normal for the time though. Gamecube's menu is lackluster too.

My only experience of the Saturn was seeing it at the very end of Goodwill's golden age for $40, and I passed.

To be fair, I wish I had money to slip into the comfort of pretending it's the 90s. I still wish to have this one day. Well, at least I have my memories that Gen Z and later will never have.

Only because majority of the good games never got translated and stayed jp only.
